NYT does not mention that he was close to Ariel Sharon (whom he called “my friend”) and it does not mention his big role in advising and urging the brutal Israeli occupation of Lebanon. He advocated an understanding between Shiites and Israel: you may judge on your own how successful he was. He thought that Israel can side with Amal against Hizb—and the two have been electoral partners and allies since the 1990s. Clinton Bailey (unlike the obituaries) was not even a learned Orientalist and his writings had no insights about the region. Far from it, he was a prisoner of his studies of the Bedouins and assumed that tribes and clans are the only units of analysis for Arab society. He really thought that Southern Lebanese Shiites are organized into clans and tribes. Edward Said in his delicious review of Thomas Friedman’s From Beirut to Jerusalem (“The Orientalist Express”in the Village Voice) mentions Bailey and his obsession with tribes as a unit of analysis for Arabs. Bailey actually publicly advised the Israeli government to turn South Lebanon into “a no man’s land” if Israel failed to reach an understanding with Shiites. New York Times maintained that Arab bedouins loved him, its evidence? One unknown native that it cites.
