Families won’t want to live in a state without a properly supported education system and quality local governments, no matter what the property tax rate may be.

This irresponsible plan starts by eliminating $3.5 billion in school aid revenue & that’s before we add in the cuts to local district and gov revenue. In the name of property tax reform.

The House Government Operations Committee is considering bills this morning to massively cut revenues available to local govs & schools. #mileg

A partisan designation will also block federal employees, anyone who’s position is paid with federal funds, state civil servants and the military from serving their districts.

MI House Elections Committee approved HB4588 today to make school board elections partisan. It will now go to the full House. Contact your Rep & tell them your thoughts on being forced to declare a party to run for school board. #mileg

Senate finally passes a school aid budget just after 1 am and 3 months into the school fiscal year. Now for the House to act. #miched

We still have concerns over how much higher ed money will be shifted into School Aid to free up general fund dollars for other purposes.

Conference committee expected yet this evening. With votes to follow. Senate still has the revenue and roads bills before it to vote on.

Summary of the K-12 budget coming out, perpupil foundation at $10,050; free meals continue, Schl safety & mental health at $300M. Still waiting on the actual budget doc to fill in details. #miched

We are working on more details but other school funding should be fine because it is paid ahead. Fed free and reduced lunch has funding to last 2-3 months. SNAP/bridge cards has funding to cover 1 month. Hopefully shutdown doesn’t last longer than that.

Fed government shut down at midnight. Head start programs that receive funding Oct 1 are immediately impacted and Impact Aid that replaces federal funding due from federal tax exempt lands will also be stopped quickly.

What we don’t know: any details on funding amounts, what else is funded in the budget, how/if the $750M sales tax shift will be backfilled #miched
