I left my investment banking career behind making $500K+ a year to buy and build an HVAC SMB. It wasn’t for the paycheck. I’ll make a fraction of what a made in banking and SMB ownership doesn’t carry the same “security” as a W2 employee. It wasn’t for the work/life balance. In banking, I was constantly on my phone, taking the next call, text, email, etc. Nights, weekends, and holidays. With SMB ownership, it’s no different. I liked the idea of betting on myself. If I’m willing to put in the same amount of effort and hours into building something, I might as well do it for myself and not someone else. In banking, or really any W2 role, your financial upside is capped. That cap might be a very high ceiling but there’s still a ceiling. Regardless of the amount of effort. With SMB ownership, there’s literally no ceiling. I’ve personally met with guys that went from zero to a 9 figure net worth by betting on themselves and building a great company. That’s why I decided to leave banking. To see what I can build on my own. Money isn’t necessarily the objective. It’s just the scorecard to know you’re doing something right.
