The Assistant to the President of Azerbaijan, Hikmat Hajiyev has slammed the latest European Parliament resolution as a 'diplomatic disgrace', warning it risks undermining fragile peace efforts between Azerbaijan and Armenia. Speaking in Khankendi, he said the move is provocative and could derail ongoing normalisation, despite what he described as Azerbaijan’s continued push for stability and regional cooperation.

On International Jazz Day, pleased to share A Story About Folkjazz: From West to East, a documentary by 🇸🇪 filmmaker Mikael Silkeberg tracing a unique musical dialogue between 🇸🇪 & 🇦🇿, where jazz meets folk traditions, as a universal language connecting cultures across borders. About the film: A Story About Folkjazz: From West to East is a 60-minute documentary tracing a remarkable musical dialogue between Sweden and Azerbaijan - two geographically distant countries connected by culture, improvisation, folk memory, and a shared openness to cultural exchange. The film begins in Stockholm, where Mikael Silkeberg reflects on how, sixty years ago, the Swedish classic Jazz på Svenska by Jan Johansson blended traditional folk melodies - such as “Ack Värmland du sköna” - with jazz improvisation. The album became a cornerstone of Swedish musical identity and remains the best-selling jazz record in Swedish history. The documentary then turns to a pivotal moment in 1966, when Jan Johansson performed at the Tallinn Jazz Festival and encountered the Azerbaijani pianist Vagif Mustafazadeh. At the time, Mustafazadeh was developing a revolutionary synthesis of jazz and mugham - Azerbaijan’s ancient modal music tradition, distinguished by microtones, complex structures, and deep improvisation. Their meeting, described as taking place in a “parallel universe,” revealed striking affinities between Swedish folk-jazz and Azerbaijani jazz-mugham: distinct musical languages united by form, emotion, and improvisational freedom. Travelling east, the film arrives in Baku, a historic meeting point between East and West. Azerbaijan’s unique position at the crossroads of civilizations -between Europe and Asia - has profoundly shaped its musical culture. Mugham absorbed these layers over centuries, and when jazz arrived in the 20th century, Baku became fertile ground for fusion. Despite political restrictions during the Soviet era, jazz flourished as a space of artistic freedom, establishing Baku as a renowned “jazz city,” admired for its vibrant festivals and cosmopolitan spirit. Through visits to the Vagif Mustafazadeh House Museum and conversations with contemporary musicians, the documentary shows how Mustafazadeh’s legacy continues to inspire new generations. Powerful performances by internationally acclaimed Azerbaijani jazz artists - Aziza Mustafazadeh, İsfar Sarabski, Shahin Novrasli, Emil Afrasiyab, Elchin Shirinov, and Etibar Asadli - demonstrate how jazz-mugham remains a living, evolving art form, rooted in tradition yet unmistakably modern. A Story About Folkjazz: From West to East reveals jazz not merely as a genre, but as a universal language - one that carries cultural identity across borders and connects West and East through shared human expression.

Azerbaijani gas is currently exported to 16 countries, 10 of which are members of the European Union. Furthermore, Azerbaijan exports natural gas to countries neighboring the Czech Republic.

A high-level, cross-party delegation from the German Bundestag - leaders of Bundestag’s German-South Caucasus Parliamentary Group - carried out a landmark visit today to Shusha and Khankendi, Azerbaijan.

Our political relations are strong, and today’s exchanges once again confirmed our shared commitment to further deepening Azerbaijan–Czechia ties. While our trade turnover is already at a solid level, we see clear potential to further structure and diversify our economic cooperation. The Business Forum held within the framework of the visit, bringing together representatives of our business communities, is an important step in this direction. In 2024, Vagif Khachaturyan was sentenced in Azerbaijan to 15 years in prison for his role in the massacre of civilians during the First Karabakh War (1992-94). He was arrested in 2023. Many in Armenia and Europe appealed to the Azerbaijani authorities to pardon him on humanitarian grounds. He was 70 years old. He himself pleaded with the authorities to let him go. Eventually, he was freed in January 2026. Now, in Armenia, he joined another criminal, former president Robert Kocharyan, in an election campaign built around revanchism.

AnewZ has obtained exclusive information that the European Union has adopted its 20th sanctions package against Russia, with Georgia’s Kulevi oil terminal, owned by SOCAR, ultimately not included in the final measures despite appearing in earlier proposals. Reports also indicate that restrictions previously imposed on the tankers Garabagh, Khankendi, Shusha, Zagatala and Zangezur have been lifted.
