Social Security turns 90 today! The nation’s bedrock retirement program provides income to about 70 million beneficiaries. But it is in desperate need of bipartisan congressional intervention to ensure it can continue to pay full promised benefits to current and future retirees.

“Moving fast and breaking things may be a mantra in Silicon Valley, but it is reckless and dangerous when applied to Social Security,” the Alliance for Retired Americans said today. “Cutting off telephone services with virtually no warning is not just irresponsible—it’s cruel.”

@BruceDSteiner I look forward to reading future guidance from the Social Security Administration about how it will review claims for those people currently affected by WEP and GPO reductions. The bill says the two provisions will be repealed for payments due after December 2023.

@MBFretirepro Suppose S1 worked in private sector and S2 for government. Both over 70. S1 got benefits since age 70. S2 couldn’t due to GPO. Does S2 now apply or does S1 amend his application? How far back can S2 get benefits? Bill goes back about a year but usual rule is 6 months.

Senate passes Social Security Fairness Act which repeals GPO and WEP, increasing benefits for nearly 3 million retired pubic sector employees. REALLY! My earlier post was premature, but the bill, which the House approved in November, now goes to President Biden for his signature
