The late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, Founding Father of the UAE, believed a nation’s success lies not in what it has achieved, but in what it gives to others. Through his example of compassion and service, he instilled a spirit of giving that continues to guide our nation today. Ahead of Zayed Humanitarian Day, our Acting Director General, H.E. Dr Shamma Al Mazrouei, was honored to join H.E. Dr Mugheer Khamis Al Khaili, Secretary General of Erth Zayed Philanthropies, to reflect on the humanitarian vision of Sheikh Zayed and its enduring relevance. More than 700 women die each day from complications related to pregnancy and childbirth. Most of these deaths occur in lower-income countries - and most could be avoided if women had access to quality care before, during and after birth. Preventable maternal deaths can end. We have the knowledge and tools needed to save mothers’ lives. Expanding access to them requires collective action and sustained investment: from governments, donors, health providers and global partners. Progress is proving it is possible to end neglected tropical diseases. Guinea worm disease once affected millions of lives across 20 countries. Today, it is on the brink of eradication, with new data announced today showing human cases at an all-time low.
