Fl. Lt. Cliff Robinson 🔻 As leader of a four-ship formation, reforming after a ‘dummy’ attack by a bounce-aircraft (Hawk), my Hunter started to judder. Flying at 420 knots, at altitude of 250′ above the ground, I noticed a lack of response from the Hunter’s control column. Now in a nose-down attitude, I had but one choice; eject! In nano-seconds I was hurled upwards out of the aircraft, then found myself dangling under my parachute. At such a low altitude, the ‘ride’ to the ground was swift, so swift I was now entering the orange fireball of what had been, my aircraft. In total fear, I closed my eyes. My next memory is that of my feet brushing along the ground; I’d survived. Resisting the temptation to stand up-right, and put pressure on my back, I rolled clear of the flames onto an unburned patch of moorland. Releasing my parachute harness and Personal Equipment Connector, I focused on activating the Locator Beacon. Gazing skyward, I could see someone from my formation circling above. Rather strangely, around this time, I heard a voice close-by inquiring as to my well-being. On giving him a positive reply, the man casually walked-off across the mountainside, never to be seen again. After what seemed like an age, 45 minutes is recorded in the official report, I heard the reassuring sound of a Sea King rescue helicopter. Next followed my second near-death experience of the day; while being winched into the helicopter, the stretcher on which I was now lying, suddenly shifted, nearly hurling me earth-ward for the second time! I remember little of the flight to Withybush hospital, only the relief of being back in the land of the living. “In my 33 years in the RAF I have been privileged to work on many fast jet aircraft weapons systems including the maintenance of the aircraft assisted escape systems. These aircraft included the Hunter T7 T8, Buccaneer S2, Jaguar GR1, Harrier GR3 / T4, GR 7, 9, T10 and the faithful Tornado GR1 – 4A with assisted escape systems from Mk 6, 9, 10 and 12. Now I am the Safety Manager for BAE for Hawk T1/T2 and Typhoon FGR4 where I still discuss safe systems of work with those who currently maintain Martin Baker escape systems. The majority of my time was on Tornado where I honed my wire locking skills in many of the tricky little items such as the unlocking jacks, twin breech and jack head with many hours setting up the MDC system. The Mk10 however, was the easiest seat to work on albeit with a large array of explosives, necessary for its clean operation in saving lives it was a pleasure to be part of the maintenance staff providing a safe means of escape for the aircrew. I thoroughly enjoyed working on aircraft assisted escape systems and have the greatest respect for every person who are maintainers and part of a select few who helped saved lives. After many years of maintenance, I enjoyed a parting present to be able to fly in the back seat of a GR4 Tornado in the knowledge that if anything went pear shaped I would be very confident in the escape system.” John Prictor, Maintainer 🔻 Read more stories on our website: martin-baker.com/maintainers/ #EngineeringForLife #Maintainer
