Tungsten is quietly becoming one of the most strategic critical minerals in 2026. APT prices have surged from ~US$800/mtu in Dec 2025 to around 2,600-3,000 usd/mtu) in March, driven by tightening supply and accelerating demand from defence, aerospace, and advanced manufacturing. Tungsten’s importance isn’t new. During both World War I and World War II, it was considered a strategic war material. Its extreme hardness and high melting point made it essential for armour-piercing ammunition, high-temperature alloys, and hardened steel used in weapons and military equipment. Today, those same properties make tungsten indispensable for missile systems, aerospace components, electronics, and advanced machining tools. As global defence spending rises and supply chains tighten, secure access to tungsten is becoming a geopolitical priority once again. Strategic metals are moving again.
