PRESS STATEMENT AMAECHI A GOLDEN FISH, AN ASSET TO MY GOVERNMENT Former President Muhammadu Buhari congratulates Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi, former Governor of Rivers State, and Transport Minister for the two terms of his administration, on the attainment of the milestone of 60 years. The former president described Governor Amaechi as a “golden fish”, an asset to his administration. “Amaechi shared with me the aspiration of strengthening infrastructure, bridging the nation’s long-delayed gaps through the railways, a vital component— leading to its revival from a comatose state; the completion of abandoned projects, turning them into major transit hubs; and initiating major ones across the country, some of which were driven to completion before he left office. “The railway system which used to be the heartbeat of several towns and cities, killed and buried for decades, opened a new chapter under his leadership, faithfully serving millions of Nigerians by increasing network capacity for passenger and freight services, helping to address demand, introducing new services and rolling stock, and improving safety. “Under him, the nation witnessed a new era of railway infrastructure. IN POPE FRANCIS'S DEATH, THE POOR AND MIGRANTS HAVE LOST A FRIEND Former President Muhammadu Buhari joins Christians all across the world in mourning the demise of the Head of the Catholic Church, Pope Francis, who departed the earth on Easter Monday. In a reaction to the news of the death, the former President said Christians in Nigeria and all over the world would miss the exemplary leadership of the church by a Pope who served the poor and the weak, and cared much about migrants and refugees. "He was a Pope who strove to build a beneficial, complementary relationship between the followers of the world's two greatest religions — Islam and Christianity. "Just hours before his demise, he made a call for an end to the war in Gaza. I hope Israel and Hamas will heed this call in final respect to the Pope who had the distinction of bringing climate change to the Vatican, and recognising the Palestinian State," said the former President. AT MEETING WITH APC GOVERNORS, EX-PRESIDENT BUHARI CALLS FOR CITIZEN-CENTRIC APPROACH Former President Muhammadu Buhari has advised the members of the Progressive Governors Forum, PGF, to adopt a citizen-centric approach, saying that leadership presents both a challenge and opportunity, and that balancing the two would significantly advance national progress. The former President expressed confidence in the progress being made by the governors elected on the platform of the All Progressives Congress, APC and reiterated his call for continued dedication to the nation's progress. He also said leaders should accord importance to the welfare of the people, not themselves, offering his personal example of leaving office with the same physical assets he had before his presidency. He thanked the Tinubu administration for renovating his home in Kaduna, explaining that while the building looked very much the same externally, so much improvement was made inside. He thanked the Governors for the visit, saying that while he had worked with several of them, some others were new to him. The Chairman of the PGF, Imo state Governor, Hope Uzodinma said that their visit was to greet the former President on the occasion of the Eid-el-Fitr, and “convey our heart-felt expression of gratitude and enduring respect for your immense contributions to Nigeria’s democracy and strengthening our party. “Many of us recall with pride the principled role you played in the founding of the APC. That legacy continues to shape our party’s identity direction. “We are especially gratified, only a few weeks ago, to hear your public affirmation that the APC remains your party of choice. That declaration could not have come at a better time. It reaffirmed your place as a pillar of our movement and provided reassurance to members of our party. Mr President, you are pan-Nigerian. “Your Excellency, your legacy in Nigerian history is secure. You remain the only opposition candidate in our nation’s history to have defeated an incumbent. You did not only win power, you governed with calm resolve and handed over, with honor, to another APC president. For this, we are extremely grateful. “Your administration gave expression to our party’s core principles through your focus on security, economic recovery, and anti-corruption. Your efforts reclaimed territory from insurgents, extended social investment programs like the Conditional Cash Transfer and School Feeding Program, and ushered in road and rail revolution that is still bearing fruit. “Programs such as the Anchor Borrowers Scheme directly impacted food security. You taught us to produce what we eat and eat what we produce. You brought dignity to governance and deepened the progressive ethos of our party. “Today, APC is being renewed and repositioned under your worthy successor, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR. His leadership is bold, reform-driven, and unshakably committed to progress. Your public endorsement of him in your recent birthday message was a powerful symbol of continuity and humility. “Your Excellency, today we honor you, not just for your past service but for the enduring values you represent. We ask you to continue to support and guide us as we take the next steps to deepen progressive politics across the nation, and ensure that APC continues to be in power for a more prosperous Nigeria.” Signed. ON THE OCCASION OF TINUBU’S BIRTHDAY, EX-PRESIDENT BUHARI SAYS, “I AM PROUD OF OUR ASSOCIATION” Former President Muhammadu Buhari underscored the bond between him and the President with a call, joining the family and the nation in celebrating the birthday of Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Adekunle Tinubu. In a telephone call on Friday, the former President said he and the members of his family are in prayers for Tinubu for long life, good health and the successful administration of the country by the President, as he marks his birthday. “When we pray for our leaders, we are praying for ourselves and the nation. We owe this to ourselves and the nation,” Muhammadu Buhari said to President Tinubu. The former President said his family and himself remain indebted to President Tinubu and other leaders of the party for the invaluable contributions they made towards the formation of the All Progressives Congress, APC, catapulting him to the presidency for two terms, after failed attempts in the past, and in helping to produce another APC administration with the Asiwaju himself at its head. “No doubt, the annals of the country will not be complete without bringing into mention and without a recognition of the varied and numerous roles of President Tinubu as an entrepreneur, a party stalwart, a staunch activist, party organizer, party builder, a reliable ally and a serial winner of democratic elections. I am truly proud of my association with the Asiwaju. “When Nigerians handed the baton of leadership to the APC in 2015, it was a mandate to lay the foundation for a new Nigeria where the poor get opportunities for a better future and I am glad that the vision is not lost. It was a victory of all those who wish the country’s good.” He also used the opportunity to wish the President, his family, and the nation a successful completion of the Ramadan fast and a happy and joyful Sallah (Eid).
