For 10 years, Miami Dade College's Microbiology Girls Club at our Homestead Campus has been hosting a summer camp where high school girls engage in real laboratory research and explore careers in STEM. During that time, more than 250 students have participated in the program, with many going on to become MDC dual enrollment students or attend the College after high school. 📺 Take a look at our recent Local 10 feature to learn more about the program: local10.com/features/2026/… This work wouldn't be possible without the leadership of Dr. Nia Madison, faculty member at our Homestead Campus, and funding from AAUW Community Action Grants, which help create pathways for girls in grades K-12 to develop STEM confidence, skills, and identity.

MDC students earned Top 10 finishes nationwide at the FBLA Collegiate National Leadership Conference in accounting, finance, project management, computer science, and other business and technology disciplines. Competing against undergraduate seniors and graduate students from colleges and universities across the country, they proved they can excel on the national stage. We're constantly working to ensure our students graduate with real-world skills they can apply in the workforce right away. These recognitions reflect the strength of our programs, but they also demonstrate something equally important: MDC students are ready to contribute in the workplace from day one.

Tonight, MDC's iconic Freedom Tower joins landmarks across the country and around the world in lighting up to commemorate America's 250th anniversary. Through a projection-mapping experience created by our gaming and animation students, the Freedom Tower came alive with key moments, people and milestones from our nation's history. It was a fitting tribute from a landmark in our community that has long stood as a symbol of freedom and the promise of a new beginning. Happy 250th birthday, USA! 🇺🇸

As Democracy's College, we've spent this year bringing our community together to celebrate America's 250th birthday. From civic conversations and cultural programs to immersive learning experiences and community service, our students, faculty, staff, alumni and neighbors came together to reflect on our past and help shape what comes next. A250 at MDC has been about the core of what democracy is all about: people coming together to participate in their communities, support one another and contribute to something far greater than themselves. Celebrate the Fourth of July at the Freedom Tower. 🇺🇸✨

MDC will feature a light and animation show projected onto the exterior of the Freedom Tower, bringing 250 years of American history to life through projection mapping. 

Created by Miami Dade College gaming and animation students from @MAGIC_MDC, the show uses one of Miami's most recognizable landmarks as a canvas to help tell the American story.

Join us on July 4th for this special presentation and then head over to Bayfront Park to watch the evening's fireworks. 🎆

Follow Antonia and Kyulhee, SGA Board members at our Wolfson Campus, as they visit the Museum of Miami to explore the historic documents that helped shape our nation, now on display as part of the Freedom Plane Tour. 🇺🇸✈️   Located just a few blocks from our Wolfson Campus, the exhibit is free and open to the public through July 5 and is a great way is a great stop for anyone ready to nerd out over America’s 250th birthday this Independence Day.

🇺🇸 Our MDC community came together ahead of Independence Day to celebrate America’s 250th birthday. North and Medical Campuses teamed up to host our inaugural Cook-Off Championship, bringing together firefighters, law enforcement and corrections officers, healthcare workers and first responders. At Kendall Campus, students, faculty and staff gathered for a campus celebration centered on community and connection, with our student-athletes joining the festivities and helping bring plenty of MDC spirit to the day. Throughout the week, we’ll be sharing more ways our students are getting ready for America 250. Then, on Saturday, we will project on the exterior of the Freedom Tower a student-led special graphic animated video highlighting moments from our nation’s history.

Congratulations to Brandyn Hernandez, Natalie Martinez Marin, Carlos Fabrizio Ramos Ibarra, Christian Ramírez, Valeria Sosa Miranda, and London Washington on being selected as recipients of the Timothy E. Johnson, Jr. Scholarship. Established in honor of Timothy E. Johnson, Jr., this scholarship supports students in our Professional Pilot Technology program by helping defray the cost of flight training and making the path to becoming a pilot more accessible. As we continue to expand opportunities through our Florida Center for Aviation and Aerospace, we are strengthening pathways for students to earn their degrees and enter Florida’s growing aviation and aerospace industry. We congratulate these students and wish them continued success as they advance in their training and careers.

Gustavo Roman had the creative expertise to design jewelry and the ambition to open his own studio in the heart of Downtown Miami. What he needed were the business fundamentals to help turn his craft into a stronger, more professional operation. So, he joined MDC’s Build Up program at The Idea Center. He learned essential business fundamentals, was paired with an experienced entrepreneur mentor and worked with a team of MDC students to launch a new website and develop a job-tracking app for his studio. This program is part of The Urban Poverty and Business Initiative (UPBI), a @NotreDame–coordinated national network supporting entrepreneurs in 59 cities across the globe through training, mentorship and access to capital to drive local economic mobility. Inspired by the @FIFAWorldCup 26™ and as part of its commitment to economic empowerment, @CocaCola supports the University of Notre Dame’s UPBI as it expands its work to more communities, including Miami, through local institutions such as MDC. Miami Dade College and CIS University have signed a memorandum of understanding to expand entrepreneurship programming and student exchanges between Miami and Madrid. Implemented through The Idea Center at MDC, the partnership will give students access to programs focused on entrepreneurship, innovation and the use of AI tools to launch and grow startups. MDC students will gain firsthand exposure to entrepreneurial ecosystems abroad, while CIS University students will have the opportunity to immerse themselves in Miami’s growing startup and technology scene. The agreement will also help students from both institutions build international networks and develop a broader understanding of entrepreneurship in a global economy.
