Last night Comptroller Brooke Lierman joined the @MarylandOPD for the Gideon’s Day film screening and panel discussion in Annapolis. After being denied counsel, and wrongfully imprisoned, Clarence Gideon fought for his right to representation in Gideon v. Wainwright. Last night's event honored the legacy of Gideon and highlighted ongoing work to ensure meaningful access to counsel for all Marylanders. Thank you to the advocates, public defenders, and community members who came together for this important conversation.

Yesterday, Comptroller Brooke Lierman welcomed the @FredArtsCouncil and Senator Karen Lewis Young to the Treasury Building for a reception celebrating 50 Years of Creative Community. The exhibit is featured through the Office of the Comptroller’s Arts in Treasured Spaces program, which brings rotating Maryland art into public spaces across the building. A wonderful evening honoring local artists and the creative spirit they bring to our state.

Comptroller Brooke Lierman, serving as Vice-Chair, attended the Tuesday, March 17, 2026, meeting of the Maryland State Retirement and Pension System Board of Trustees. During the meeting, the MSRPS Board approved the transition plan toward the new strategic asset allocation policy. This new policy will help steward the long-term return goal of 6.8%, supporting the retirement benefits for Maryland's public employees and retirees. Under the new asset allocation, the fund will increase the share invested in public stocks and private equity investments from 50% to 55% and increase credit investments from 9% to 12%. At the same time, the portion invested in investment-grade bonds would decrease from 20% to 18%, and the current 6% target allocation to the absolute return portfolio would be removed. The Office of the Comptroller is continuing to quickly process Maryland tax returns. Here is an update on our progress as of 3/16/2026: - 1,274,892 tax returns submitted for processing - 895,424 tax refunds issued - $1.3 billion in tax refunds issued - 60,000 tax returns processed per day, on average. - Average 3-5 day tax refund processing time for the majority of returns. Our teams continue to improve the speed and quality of these processes and are seeing faster processing times than Tax Season 2025.
