Artemis II chief astronaut Reid Weisman gave a shoutout to the state of Maryland and his alma mater, Dulaney High School, after Sen. Chris Van Hollen asked a question during a call with the crew of the spacecraft heading back toward Earth. "Lots of love," Weisman said about the state of Maryland before offering his advice to students at Dulaney and across the country. 🎥: Senator Chris Van Hollen on X

House Republicans need to act. Weeks into this unnecessary war, there’s still no clear direction, no real progress, and more questions than answers. It’s time to get serious, come back from your vacations, and do the job the American people sent us here to do.

I made it clear today: Trump’s war of choice is reckless, deadly, and driving up costs at home. House Democrats are forcing Republicans to go on the record with a War Powers Resolution vote. No more dodging. End this war now before more lives are lost.

I’m deeply proud of my military service – and no MAGA billionaire is going to change that. But billionaires should not be able to use their wealth to manipulate local media. Not here in Maryland, and not anywhere else in the country.

@mddems What’s the complaint? A taxpayer in Maryland asked questions the governor doesn’t like, and since there is proof he was a republican, he is asking in bad faith?

Maryland Gov. Wes Moore responds to the larger context of the Baltimore Sun's investigation into his military service. Since 2024, the paper's owner is a Trump ally named David Smith, who is the executive chairman of Sinclair Broadcast Group. bsky.app/profile/did:pl…

If I may...for a moment... Here are some facts, since the Maryland Democratic Party and Gov. Wes Moore’s communications team seem to want to defame me and the work I dedicate my life to—bringing you the news about your government. I am not a Republican operative. That is patently false and a political stunt by the official taxpayer-funded office of Moore, who is steering the MD Dem Party, while on your dollar, as the state continues to struggle financially. I had a very public breakup with the Maryland GOP because I felt the current political climate had become toxic and had lost its focus: advocating for making the lives of everyday people better. I resigned. I talked about this for months when I had the honor of being on air previously at WBAL NewsRadio. I also shared that I voted for Moore, yes, a Democrat, even though I was previously a Maryland Republican. Lt. Gov. Aruna Miller, Moore's number two, did one of her first live interviews during one of the WBAL NewsRadio shows I hosted on National Women’s Day. Let's also not forget the stories in my current role I have just recently covered that focused on Republican accountability in Annapolis. I treat everyone equally in bringing stories to you. Not much of a “Republican operative.” But hey, it seems the narrative being pushed by Moore’s office isn’t based on facts… Now, as part of an ill-conceived media strategy from a spokesperson for former failed presidential candidate Kamala Harris to discredit me – a strategy not being executed by a political operative or campaign official, but by the official spokesperson for the state that Moore has hired using your Maryland taxpayer dollars – is claiming “you’re not a JoUrNaLiSt” because Moore's office does not like my news coverage. This is your tax dollars at work. Not campaign money. Your tax dollars. Some on our team have been investigating the facts surrounding the governor’s background, including his military, academic, and athletic records. Instead of providing the documents that the same official State of Maryland spokesperson said he would provide, Moore’s office has engaged with the MD Dem Party in a personal smear campaign to hide from the following: 1) A recent UMBC poll that shows 24% of surveyed residents don’t think Moore is honest. 2) An unpopular mid-cycle redistricting bill Moore touted nationally that failed to pass the Democratically controlled Senate for a plethora of reasons, sources say. 3) An Annapolis that is still fighting to bring you a $150 annual break in your historically high energy bill, despite Moore announcing weeks ago that the job was done, and now is aimlessly fighting me on a personal level. 4) Questions about the governor’s claims relating to his military record that remain unanswered. One thing I learned in my prior life in politics (that admittedly, I don’t miss) is that facts matter and the art of political communications is diversion when polls are low. Your tax dollars are actively funding Moore’s press team to engage in campaigning on state time, yet they avoid answering the questions you, Maryland residents, have asked us to raise. It’s not personal. I will keep asking about the issues you care about and continue delivering the news despite political pressure to silence my constitutional right to inform you about what is happening in your state. I am grateful for the company I work for and its mission to relentlessly be “the voice of the people.” Now it’s time to get back to work.

Let's set the record straight, started by facts outlined by @SpotlightMDNews's @candynotcandace. I will continue to report facts, just like my colleagues do. How often do we do it? Every. Single. Day. Because that's what journalists do for the public.
Candy Woodall@candynotcandace

Democrats sure are putting in a lot of work to discredit a series before it's even started running. That alone should raise a question: why? In January, I was warned directly that if Spotlight continued its investigation into Gov. Wes Moore's military records—and one of his superiors—that his office would send files to every media reporter to try and discredit us.  We saw the same playbook in 2022 when a FOX45 reporter asked why Moore allowed claims that he had received a Bronze Star that he didn't have at the time. His team accused the reporter and media outlet of bias and a smear campaign. Two years later, after the New York Times wrote about the Bronze Star Moore hadn't received, the narrative changed, and the governor said it was "an honest mistake." In an August 2024 statement on his military record, Moore acknowledged he knew before leaving Afghanistan that he had not received the award.  Spotlight's reporting digs deeper into Moore's military records and more, and our investigative series will begin to publish soon. This is standard journalism to scrutinize the words and records of elected officials and candidates who hold positions of power and public trust. Our loyalty is to the Maryland public we serve — not any public official or political party.  Our work has been fair. We've sent hundreds of questions. Most have gone unanswered. We've offered multiple sit-down interviews with the governor and his staff. They have declined repeated requests.  Moore's office hasn't seen a word of this series yet, but the governor and his communications staff are actively campaigning and peddling a narrative to smear it. In fact, his director of media strategy said this week of us, "They don't deserve to be treated like a news outlet and nothing that comes out of Sinclair should be taken seriously." They continued this effort last night in an interview on MSNOW with Jen Psaki, Biden's former press secretary.  The real questions you should be asking right now: Why don't they want you to read the series? What is it they don't want you to know? And if we're so wrong about everything, why not just release the records and prove it? If you want to know more, keep reading The Baltimore Sun, a 200-year-old newspaper that has survived many governors.
