More than 10,000 Veterans from the Cleveland area have joined the Million Veteran Program, the VA’s largest research effort. MVP is working to improve veterans' lives by studying how genes, lifestyle, military experiences and exposures affect health. More than 1.5 million veterans across the nation have already joined MVP. Veterans can join MVP at participating VA facilities across Northeast Ohio or online at mvp.va.gov. Participation in MVP is voluntary.

Life happens. We understand. But missing an appointment without canceling can delay your care and may require restarting your referral or consult. A no-show doesn’t just affect one appointment — it can impact follow-up treatment and access for fellow Veterans. If you can’t attend, cancel as soon as possible.

“These grants invest directly in communities that know Veterans best and are often the first to recognize when someone is struggling,” said VA Secretary Doug Collins. “They have been successful in connecting Veterans, service members, and their families — especially those not yet engaged with VA — to services that help reduce suicide risk and promote well-being.”  news.va.gov/press-room/va-…

At 18, Anne T Hall knew she wanted to work in a medical setting and help people, but she knew she didn't want to become a nurse. "A counselor mentioned the words social worker to me, and once I did more research, it sounded like something I'd want to do," she said. Part of federal service for 23 years, she started at the DC VA MC in 2003 as an intern before joining the DOD and then returning to the VA at the VA Maryland Health Care System in 2017. "I help by listening to Veterans and their families, and then giving them a voice. So much of my work over the last 20 something years has been being a middle person or go between for Veterans/Service Members and their families and the medical teams. Helping them navigate these large complex systems or obtain the care they need or feel more at ease while hospitalized," she said. What she has considered the favorite part of her job has changed over the years. She enjoyed her time at the DOD, working directly w/service members, retirees, and their families. "I met and worked with some of the most amazing people from all different disciplines while at DOD during the heights of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. There was such a comradery between those of us working on the hospital floors at that time and while the work was really hard, it was manageable because we had such a dedicated team," Hall said. Fast forward to her current position in the Caregiver Support Program, Anne says, "while I am not doing as much direct patient care, I still get that opportunity to be part of a team and I think that is my favorite part, engaging with my staff and navigating the ups and downs with them. I love when I can see just how hard they have worked to help a Veteran and their family and they succeed. They work with some extremely complex cases and the creativity and willingness to go above and beyond to figure things out always has me in awe." Anne wants Veterans to know that the social work staff cares. "Our team is dedicated to being able to help them navigate and overcome potential psychosocial barriers to care. We are a resilient group who keep trudging ahead no matter what is thrown our way."

#VAResearchNewsBrief: VA Palo Alto Health Care System researchers and their colleagues demonstrated that remote sleep monitoring has the potential to help predict suicidal ideations in Veterans with PTSD#. Seventy-five Veterans with PTSD were mailed a mattress sensor system to measure their sleep habits, movements, and biometrics. After a telephone-guided set-up, participants no longer needed to directly interact with the measurement system as data was automatically uploaded nightly, with researchers conducting weekly telephone assessments of mental health and suicidal ideation. Over an average of 55 days, Veterans at high risk for suicide went to bed an average of 63 minutes earlier than low-risk participants. Shorter sleep periods were also associated with increased suicidal ideations. The results highlight the connection between sleep quality and mental health and show how low-cost sleep monitoring could help predict spikes of suicidal tendencies with no additional burden to the Veteran. (Journal of Affective Disorder, Jan. 16, 2026). #VAResearch #VeteransHealth #MentalHealthResearch #PTSDResearch #SuicidePrevention #HealthInnovation research.va.gov/news_briefs/ne…...
