Today marks 11 years since I watched my dad die. 11 years since I tried to resuscitate him during cardiac arrest. 11 years since I first thought it was all my fault. A 🧵on #grief, #loss, and #healing 1/19ish

A fun medical fact is that the parathyroid gland was actually first discovered in the rhinoceros in the 1850s (Ok this is actually just an excuse to share more of my daughter’s art ;)

of my mom’s diagnosis. It was a space of connection that broke through a bit of the isolation and always reaffirmed my decision to leave medical school to be with my mom. Supporting her through the last 4 years of her life was the most devastating privilege and worth every minute

Though I haven’t been active on here for a while, I’m so grateful to everyone who supported my caregiving journey and provided resources for my mom. From words of encouragement to sharing opportunities for flexible remote work, this community helped me get through the early years

The light of my life, the most beautiful and incredible Mama, passed away. Her resilience unparalleled and her strength a force to be reckoned with. Through sheer will, she outlasted her prognosis from a brutal metastatic cancer many times over to stay with us as long as possible

Andrew Garfield talks to Elmo about missing his mother after she recently passed away. “When I miss her I remember it’s because she made me so happy, I can celebrate her & miss her at the same time”

Let's try something new. For this weekend only, send me your logline in a DM and I'll give you an honest critique. It only works if I follow you back so if I don't let me know in a comment below. This could be a disaster but have at it

@doclauravater It makes a HUGE difference. Currently trying to find my mom another oncologist who does exactly this. Helps so much for the patient to not feel like just another medical record

Don't underestimate the little things. Like remembering a patient was taking a special trip, or had a wedding, or was meeting a new grandchild. Make a brief note in their chart & follow up next time you see them. This helps me hold onto the humanity of my patients, and my own.

give up hope that things can get better painlessly. But yeah idk I think it’s interesting how the brain still tries to prepare and thinks it can pre-empt the pain and in some ways, sure, we can plan to do things and try to cross off bucket lists but at the end of the day

Anticipatory grief feels like crying wolf to yourself each time. First, grieving a stage IV diagnosis. Hope from treatments, but then grieving each progression and change of treatment until now it’s entirely experimental. More grief. With my dad, it was sudden death, which led to
