2/ Memorial, initiated i.a. by 1975 Nobel Peace Prize laureate Andrei Sakharov, was founded in the former USSR in 1987 and became a crucial voice for human rights. Liquated already in 2021 by Russian authorities, Memorial was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2022.

1/ The designation of the “International Public Movement Memorial” by the Russian Supreme Court as “extremist organisation” is a loss for the preservation of the memory of the victims of Soviet repression, and yet another worrying development for civil society in Russia.

Today marks 4 years since the Bucha massacre, where Russian forces killed over 400 civilians near Kyiv. A stark reminder of the ongoing brutality and the urgent need for accountability for Russian war crimes.
