The Bona Family did it. This was the most successful #BonaGivingDay in history. More than 1,100 donors. More than $686,000 raised. Your generosity changes lives here. Thank you for believing in Bona’s. 🐺

@kylesockwell If guy owned a team and it cost $50,000 to run a home game If the ticket sales/TV revenue for each game was $15,000, he either goes broke or folds up the team. Listen, I would like to give you some insight on what goes into a drop. I lived it. Feel free to reach out.

I’m struggling to follow your logic and how it differs from mine. Swimming (at the power 4 level) run deep in the red and almost all of its revenue comes from donations (a non scalable revenue channel) while also pretty much never getting any sort of linear distribution or selling any tickets to home events. That’s why they get cut as opposed to a women’s basketball that is often on an ESPN/ESPN2 and does sell tickets (even if it’s not always a sell out). Swimming does get cut as a way to save money and recapture tuition, but they also get cut because they don’t provide 1% of the value many other programs like volleyball, basketball, softball, baseball, wrestling, basketball, and of course football do.

College swimming needs standardization. Now. • At conference meets, we score through the C final • At NCAAs, we score through the B final • Some conferences run 10-lane prelims • Some conferences run 8-lane prelims • One conference meet uses event lineup A • Another conference meet uses event lineup B It might not seem like a big deal, and I constantly hear the “It’s not that serious” argument from people, but this is our championship format, this is the structure of our game, and it's all over the place. If we scoff at someone calling out inconsistency in the structure of our event product, we don’t get to act shocked when fans are confused, when media partners hesitate, or when administrators question the value of the sport. Two programs just got cut, and I doubt they'll be the last. The sport has to be more consumable, and a consumable product cannot be this confusing. The two least profitable sports in the collegiate ecosystem are also the ones running the most confusing, hardest-to-follow, multi-day championship formats. Food for thought.

@kylesockwell Are they ever going to drop women's basketball because of what it loses? You are right, swimming needs to make itself more important, but please don't tell me they drop teams because of budget concerns.

@MGianiodis Not following your logic. Swimming absolutely costs what they're saying it costs. The full financial breakdown is out there. Coach salaries, scholarships, pool costs, etc.

@kylesockwell Exactly my point with this chart, look at the biggest losers. Neither of those sports are in trouble because???? It's never about the money. It is about difficult decisions, creativity and a return to sanity in spending.

@MGianiodis Data referenced isn’t just based on one school, it’s an aggregate. Most P4 swim / dive programs (from hard data released by the schools themselves) lose between $1.2M - $2M per gender per season.

@kylesockwell @mermaidspk Kyle, if they were serious about saving costs, they would start 1-An honest assessment as to where their football program will be in 10 years and 2- A deep dive into the costs of women's "revenue" sports that lose the most money.

The “big sports” are getting significantly more expensive in this new era, which means athletic departments are being forced to find revenue wherever they can. The harsh reality is that swimming is expensive to operate and, in most departments, generates some of the lowest revenue numbers. And even that revenue is largely driven by donations, which isn’t scalable in the eyes of an AD.

SWIM NEWS: A source close to the Marshall University swim team tells me that athletes were just informed that the program is being cut. This news comes just one week before their conference championships.

@ByMHarrington I guess we differ on what a miracle is (usually involves a Hail Mary for me). Your old colleague at the news declared that NE had the better QB and coach with 3/4's of the game left. Like I said, let it play out before you make statements.

@MGianiodis Dude, it’s the first time in 120 games the Pats lost at home up 17+. It tied the biggest deficit Bills have erased on the It’s a miracle win. No shame saying that. Facts are facts.

Sorry state of Pegulaville: 1). #Sabres aren’t close to being a playoff team. 2) #Bills aren’t close to being a Super Bowl team. May not even be a playoff team.

@ByMHarrington Miracle wins? They held the ball for 35 mins today. There is no shame in admitting a false start on the self-loathing that is the Western New York sports fan.

@ByMHarrington Do they have a shot at the playoffs now? There is nothing better than not watching this app in-game, getting on postgame and reading the posts-they are awesome. Better to let the game play itself out and let the season play itself out.

@MGianiodis Look at the remaining schedule, MattyG. And look at the standings now. No. 6 seed. It’s tenuous. They *should* make it. But they *should have* won today too.
