It's estimated that hundreds of thousands of cats were deployed in the trenches in WWI, aboard war ships and during WWII. They served as ratters and gas detectors but above all they were the mascots of the troops, giving comfort, reminding soldiers of home, family, and love.

Breakthrough Moment💕 You might remember the frightened mum cat and kittens we rescued from inside an old car last weekend. It’s only been a week since they came into our care, but yesterday felt like a really special step forward. Mum is still very nervous, her ears stay flat, her eyes are constantly wide, and she still throws in the odd hiss to remind us she’s not quite sure about humans yet, but yesterday, for the first time, she felt comfortable enough to come over and take food whilst Carolyn sat quietly beside her. For a frightened mum cat, that’s a huge bit of progress. Despite being scared herself, she continues to be an absolutely brilliant mum to her kittens who already seem to love every bit of attention they can get! She’s still learning that she’s safe, but little moments like this are exactly how trust begins ❤️ Sharing our posts really, really helps our vital work #cats

Kansas City, MO is preparing to welcome the W🌎RLD. Great to see the KC Fire Department rolling out new custom ambulances and UTVs to strengthen emergency response ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Faster response times, better crowd safety ,+ a stronger KC for residents & visitors alike. Proud to support funding and security planning that helps make major global events like this possible in our community! fox4kc.com/sports/2026-wo…

One week with Bumpy! Like any baby, he sleeps deeply and often – especially snuggled up to his Keeper, with a tummy full of milk. Bumpy was rescued just last weekend, after the Kenya Wildlife Service received reports of a deceased female hippo with an orphan left behind. She appears to have died in a territorial fight, likely defending her baby’s life. Bumpy had stayed huddled beside his mother’s body for at least a day. Now, Bumpy has a family with us and a wild future ahead. He’ll never be alone again – Keepers like Joseph, pictured here, are with him around the clock, loving him and attending to his every need. As you can see, he is lapping it up! Read his full rescue story and find out how to support his journey: sheldrickwildlifetrust.org/orphans/bumpy
