@MHopeMK If a government can't run a Mine then surely we can't expect them to run a country competently, which is a far more complex undertaking.
We say this guy can't drive a ka corrola but then are bizarrely ok with him driving a truck and trailer!

I will say it again? The Zambian government CANNOT run mines. You see Kobold metals investing 2.5 billion in Mingomba Copper mine and you think govt can do the same? The same govt that cannot fix drainages? Please.
Let us let the investors do their thing and make sure we get the appropriate taxes when the mine is productive.

Mining is a long term project which requires heavy financing in order to achieve the goal. Our country doesn’t have the resources to run mines because in order to get refinancing it means the government has to borrow which now increases the cost of debt the country currently holds. Most mines require about a billion dollars in financing of which no current single bank in the country can lend unless syndicate is created. So it being a long term project it requires time in order for the government to start earning from the mines. That’s why a mixture of both the private sector and government as a shareholder can become beneficial for the country.

What hurts the most about this whole 'govt running mines' thing is that Zambia has some of the best mining engineers in the world, some of them are working in some of the biggest mines in Congo, Australia, Chile, USA and South Africa.
The issue is the system and the leadership.

These are the mentalities we don't need as a country...if we were able to run mines not a mine but mines what can stop us now that we even have a very big number of qualified personnel? We can run our mines period.
