CASSINGA DAY | President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah, President of the Republic of Namibia, today led the nation in commemorating the 48th anniversary of the Cassinga massacre, honouring both the lives lost and the survivors of the 1978 attack on Namibian refugees in southern Angola.
Delivering the keynote address in Olukekete Center Outapi Constituency, the President reflected on the brutality of the attack, where hundreds of innocent civilians, mainly women and children, were killed by the apartheid South African regime. She noted that the tragedy became a defining moment in Namibia’s liberation struggle, strengthening the resolve for independence.
Commemorated under the theme “48 years of Honour and Sacrifice Inspiring the Future,” the event paid tribute to fallen heroes and heroines while calling on Namibians to safeguard the country’s independence and unity. The President also highlighted the importance of national reconciliation, youth empowerment, and continued socio-economic development.
She further urged citizens to uphold good governance, reject corruption, and work collectively towards building an inclusive and prosperous Namibia, emphasising that the sacrifices of Cassinga must remain the foundation of the nation’s freedom and future.

COMMEMORATION | A wreath-laying ceremony was held in Outapi ahead of the Cassinga Day Celebrations, with President HE Dr. Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah leading proceedings at the memorial gravesite.
The President was joined by Speaker of the National Assembly Saara Kuugongelwa-Amadhila, SWAPO Party Secretary General Sophia N. Shaningwa, Omusati Governor Immanuel S. Shikongo, Ambassador of the Republic of Cuba Sergio Vigoa de la Uz, and Angola Consul General André Ventura.
The ceremony honoured fallen heroes and heroines whose sacrifices contributed to Namibia’s freedom and independence.

WORLD PRESS FREEDOM DAY | As the world marks World Press Freedom Day tomorrow, Namibia joins the global community in recognising the vital role of a free, independent, and responsible media in strengthening democracy and amplifying the voices of its people.
Namibia’s national commemoration will take place on 8 May 2026, where stakeholders will come together to reflect on progress made and reaffirm the country’s commitment to protecting press freedom.
A free press is essential for transparency, accountability, and an informed nation.

MAY DAY | President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah has urged Namibian workers to continue learning new skills, speaking at the International Workers' Day commemoration in Opuwo, where Kunene Governor Vipuakuje Muharukua welcomed guests and called for unity among government, workers and businesses to improve people’s lives.
The president urged trade unions to expand their role beyond protecting workers’ rights to actively promote reskilling and upskilling initiatives, ensuring that workers are prepared for emerging opportunities.
The President also called for teamwork between employers and workers, and encouraged unions to support skills training so workers are ready for new opportunities.

LAUNCHED | The Minister of Information and Communication Technology, Hon. Emma Theofelus, today launched the 2026 Cybersecurity Incident Management Guidelines in Ondangwa, Oshana Region. The event was attended by Oshana Regional Governor, Hon. Hofni Iipinge, who delivered the welcoming remarks and affirmed the region’s readiness to support the implementation of the guidelines and promote digital resilience.
The guidelines are to enhance cybersecurity and provide operational standards and best practices to detect, respond and recover from cyber incidents collectively.
Theofelus encouraged organisations to adopt a proactive risk based approach to understand vulnerabilities and implement robust controls.

CYBERSECURITY | The Ministry in partnership with NAMPOL and Salt Essential IT today commenced with information sharing sessions on Cybersecurity and Ethical Use of Social Media in Oshana region.
The sessions are part of the build-up activities to the launch of the Namibia Cybersecurity Incidents Response Team (NAM-CIRT guidelines by ICT Minister, Emma Theofelus on Wednesday in Ondangwa.
The sessions provide the general public with information on how to protect themselves on cyberspaces and promote ethical online conduct.

CABINET BRIEFING | The Minister of Information and Communication Technology, Hon. Emma Theofelus, today delivered a Cabinet briefing at the MICT Regional Office in Swakopmund, where she presented key decisions taken during the 10th and 11th Cabinet Meetings.
The briefing highlighted government’s ongoing efforts to accelerate economic recovery, strengthen public service delivery, and advance national development priorities across various sectors.
She also took time to engage and address staff at the MICT Regional Office.

SIGNING OF MOU | The Minister of Information and Communication Technology, Emma Theofelus, and Angola’s Minister of Telecommunications, Information Technologies and Social Communication, Mário Augusto da Silva Oliveira, today attended the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) and Commercial Terms Agreement between Telecom Namibia and Angola Telecom, in Swakopmund. The Angolan Ambassador to Namibia, H.E. Pedro Mutindi, was also in attendance.
The agreement was officially signed by Dr. Stanley Shanapinda, Chief Executive Officer of Telecom Namibia, and Adilson Miguel dos Santos, Chief Executive Officer of Angola Telecom, marking a significant milestone in strengthening digital cooperation between the two countries.
Speaking at the ceremony, Theofelus said the partnership reflects a shared commitment to expanding access to reliable and affordable digital infrastructure, which is critical for economic growth, service delivery and social inclusion.
Her Angolan counterpart emphasised that the agreement represents a clear political decision to deepen bilateral cooperation in digital infrastructure, positioning it as a key pillar for economic development, regional integration, and the strategic advancement of both nations. He noted that the MoU serves as a concrete step towards developing a regional submarine cable system that will enhance international connectivity, strengthen communications security, and improve the competitiveness of both economies.
The collaboration will enhance cross-border connectivity by leveraging infrastructure such as the Equiano subsea cable and Angola’s planned Southern African Regional Submarine System (SARSSy), improving network resilience and unlocking new opportunities across key sectors.
The signing underscores the growing partnership between Namibia and Angola in advancing a more connected and digitally inclusive Southern Africa.
