"The Modern Greeks did this and that" "The Byzantines did this and that" 1000 years and they still use the Ancient Greeks in a way to attack us or diminish us. They recycle the same arguments! Down to the last dot.
Paul Hill@PastPaulitics

Slop like this is so annoying. The modern Greeks have copied the style of certain ancient Athenian coins but there are thousands of years of Macedonian, Roman, Byzantine, Ottoman, and modern Greek history between the two. But slop sells like hotcakes.

@AncPhi Gimme a greek word or phrase for dilettante cuz I ain't getting your meaning. (I mean, it's a job & I bet many more like it than hate it. More rewarding than say book reviewers or film critics in general)

@urso_bruto @AncPhi Hey passive aggresive dipshit, are you @AncPhi in disguise or mansplaining just a hobby? You offered the italian word in greek letters and as for your λογοδιάρροια in english go, the phrase you didn't know you were looking for is jack of all trades master of none. Sounds boutrite

Modern Greek actually has the loanword ντιλετάντης, from the Italian "dilettante," so I am not sure why the meaning should be hard for an educated Greek speaker to understand. A dilettante is not merely an amateur. A serious amateur may love a subject deeply and pursue it with discipline. A dilettante is different. He cycles from one interest to another, enjoying the experience, the aesthetic pleasure, or the social signaling of involvement, but never submitting himself to the full demands of serious study. And if one wanted a more classical Greek equivalent, the word would be something like ἡμιμαθής - "half-learned," or "half-educated." That captures the idea very well: someone who knows a little, but not enough, and mistakes partial knowledge for real understanding or erudition.

Classicists, speaking generally, focus on texts as a kind of dilettante sport. They fail to learn or apply wisdom from the texts which they read, thinking that the texts are mere playthings in themselves, fit only for the narrow confines of academic discourse, inert and trivial.

IIRC the heat in 1976 lasted for about 6 weeks. Not just a couple of days And we all very quickly got used to it Its called 'acclimatise' for a reason And it wasn't 'unbearably hot' It was the best summer ever!
Sheer ❤️ 🏳️‍⚧️@StillUnsung

It's so painfully clear that climate change is real People talk about how "it was just as hot in 1976! So climate change isnt real" And then ignore that 1976 is their only example of an unbearably hot summer and that most of the last 10 years have been as hot or hotter than 1976

How did the planet enter an ice age with no windmills or electric cars? And how did the planet get out of that ice age without factories or farms full of cows to heat it up? If we should be worried about CO2 levels, why are we chopping trees down instead of planting new ones?

Turkish tourists flooded the Greek islands because prices there are now 2-3 times cheaper than in Turkey.

@JamesMelville I know they overdo it with the red, but the fact remains that it's 36 in London, 37, in Paris and 38 in Bordeaux and its part of a repeating pattern. London used to get the odd day over 30 in August. 25 was considered a hot day once upon a time.
