its incredibly silly and annoying that the activity of a social media page of a radical project is somehow an indication of that project's offline activity (ie the assumption that if a page is inactive or theres a lull in posting that theres a lull in the project)

It’s no mystery why Michigan has a staffing shortage when viciously long sentences are the norm. The solution is not only to reduce sentences but also to reduce the number of people in prison in the first place. (but thats not present in the article that kicked off this thread)

Then, Egan throws a transphobic curveball. He writes, “Some of the increased aggression may be testosterone-fueled,” suggesting that the "women" in WHV would be better behaved if they weren't undergoing gender-affirming HRT.  He then spends a 3rd of the article on this theory.

And, it's insulting that we even have to say this: testosterone does not create anger issues, violence, or aggression in transmasc people. This is a deeply dangerous myth that has been debunked. Did Egan even do any fact-checking on this? them.us/story/what-is-…

In the years MAPS has followed Paul Egan's reporting on the MDOC, we've never seen an article as irresponsible and misguided as this one. This is a bummer, bc his work is usually good... Let's break it down. THREAD 🧵 (1/n): article here: archive.ph/R54zq

The ticketing, hearing, and grievance systems in MDOC are a bitter joke and not an effective tool for assessing the situation inside. Old news to folks like us and to abolitionists across the US, but this is a crucial nuance for laypeople. x.com/Mich_Abolition…

In no other reporting by Egan, about "violent encounters" at the men’s facilities, or about violent conduct by correctional officers or police, or about ~violence in the community~, has he ever zeroed in on testosterone as the true culprit.

if your news source is concluding reports about prisons with advertising for the MDOC by talking about their "competitive starting salaries" and never once talking to a prisoner you're not reading reporting, you're reading prison propaganda

ever since the Kinross Uprising in 2016, most every action or protest by prisoners in the MDOC is diminished and hidden through euphemistic terminology like "disturbance" etc to avoid acknowledging prisoners as political actors its condescending and irresponsible reporting

Please donate, boost, and share! Khalique and all others held captive by the MDOC deserve legal representation for whatever redress they're seeking against the ~malicious demons of coercion~ (MDOC)

Never forget how the MDOC allowed COVID-19 to rip through the prisons & jails in 2020 and 2021. We compiled submissions from folks inside as a testimony to the harm caused by prisons, and the spirit of collective resistance to carceral violence. michiganabolition.org/2021/09/07/the…
