An open letter to Grant Smith Ellis The first time I met you, I was a new reporter covering a new case. Aidan Kearney had been arrested and I was covering a hearing. You showed up late and I extended my hand to you and introduced myself. I moved my things off a chair to make room for you. I treated you with kindness and respect because that is my default behavior when I meet someone for the first time. But it wasn't long before I experienced your unprofessional behaviors first hand. You made me uncomfortable. You lied, not only about what was happening in the courtrooms we were in but about me. I had never covered a court case before and you forced me to spend time and energy on YOU instead of myself and learning my trade. You ruined that experience for me. Your confrontational statements in and around the first Karen Read trial were distracting. It made me nervous. You forced me to be territorial and to struggle more than I needed to, which was already more than everyone else covering the trial. You spoked about me in disparaging ways to other members of the press just feet away from me. You told them lies about me. You made sexual faces to me in the middle of a courtroom which made me want to get up and push you. It made me want to cause a scene and scream. It made me want to call my husband so he could set you straight. The day you ran after me on the stairs, I thought you were going to hit me. The way you ran at me, the way you pushed me, the way you touched me, the way you accused me of hitting you, the way you acted made me fearful of what you would do next. It took EVERYTHING I had to compose myself and stay to cover the trial that day, when all I wanted to do was run to my car and cry. The next day, the Herald ran a story about the stair event and I felt utterly embarrassed. I was trying to prove my worth, covering the trial with big media players, to show an independent reporter from Fall River deserved to be there along side of them and YOU made them write an article about me, making me look like a fucking loser. I didn't even think twice about getting a restraining order on you. I knew I deserved the freedom to work without you treating me the way that you did. I'm glad I got it and I'm glad I got it extended the second year so I could work without the fear of YOU. As with all the other traumatic things that have happened to my throughout my life, I figured out a way to take the power away from the person who hurt me. I look back on those days working around you and I see that not one time did I ever stop showing up to cover a case, despite knowing you would be there. I woke up every day and put my own goals ahead of you and your unhinged behaviors, your violence and your lies. I built a name for myself there, even though you literally tried to stop me. This week, I saw many people congratulate you on graduating law school. They have all moved on from the days of you calling Aidan a rapist and pushing me on the steps. I hope you appreciate the kindness and forgiveness they have shown you. I personally don't think you deserve it. Next week my order of protection against you is up for another renewal. I will not be asking for it to be extended. I personally have zero faith that you are a changed man and that you are any less of a threat to me than you were the three other times I was granted an order against you but I'm not the same woman I was on those steps two years ago either. I have no fear. Good luck.

Thank you to all who checked in and offered words of support and encouragement over the past few days. Tuesday at about 7 pm, in the middle of dinner in Boston with a close college friend, I received horrible, soul crushing news from distraught family members. The past few days have been very difficult. As anyone who loves their dogs as much as I do will tell you, there is a large void at home, but the support is greatly appreciated and has been helpful to getting me back on my feet. Thank you all.
