@historyinmemes I used to drive by this place every day when I lived there. It was pretty cool. When the place closed down South Miami high school got a giant cobra sculpture that sat out front. Needless to say it was a very unique place but a lot of good research came out of it.

From 1947 to 1984, Bill Haast owned and ran the Miami Serpentarium, a popular tourist spot situated south of Miami, Florida. One of his main attractions was performing live venom extractions from snakes to entertain visitors. He injected the venom of several types of snakes to acquire immunity. During his lifetime, Haast had approximately 20 near-fatal encounters with venomous snakes, resulting in numerous scars on his hands. He had handled more than 3 million snakes since 1917, when he was only 7 years old and picked up his first garden snake. His fascination with exploring different snake species led him to drop out of school and join an entertainment company that put on snake shows. In 1947, Haast opened the Serpentarium in Miami, where he performed with snakes, draining their venom for various research purposes. Through these research efforts, Haast successfully helped more than 6,000 people heal from snakebites by manufacturing antidotes from venom extracts. Despite lacking formal education, he possessed an excellent command over the science of snakes and venom extraction. Due to his extensive exposure to venom, Haast developed antibodies to several different species of vipers. On 21 different occasions, he saved the lives of people bitten by venomous snakes by providing them with a blood transfusion. Moreover, Haast believed that certain snake poisons could even prevent diseases like multiple sclerosis and arthritis. He injected himself daily with these poisons, convinced that they played a crucial role in his reaching the age of 100 in excellent health.

More than 30 000 people joined the rally in support of Ukraine in Tallinn, Estonia.
