The management of Curtin University in Western Australia paid a courtesy call to @VC_JKUAT, Prof. Victoria Ngumi, to advance talks on a joint 5-year academic programme in Mining and Mineral Processing Engineering. The partnership will enable students to study for three years at JKUAT and complete the final two years at Curtin through sponsorship opportunities. I had the pleasure of hosting the leadership of the Mining Engineers Society of Kenya (@mining_MESK) led by their Chairman, Eng. @komu87, who paid a courtesy visit to my office. Our discussions zeroed in on critical priorities including eliminating mining accidents, eradicating illegal mining and promoting local content in terms of employment. I applaud MESK for their unwavering commitment to advancing safe and sustainable mining practices. Their assurance to work hand-in-hand with the Ministry on enforcement and compliance is equally commendable. To boost these efforts, I have directed the formation of a multi-agency task force to assist in safety and rescue efforts. I urge local institutions of higher learning to provide more mining courses. I also encourage mining companies to employ more local labour force including engineers, geologists and other mining-related professionals.
