Jeffco friends, heads up as you roll into the weekend. We are in Stage 1 Fire Restrictions, and conditions are stacked against us right now. We’ve had very little moisture, multiple fires recently along the Front Range, and we are expecting wind with extremely dry fuels. That combo can turn one small mistake into a fast-moving wildfire. No outdoor fires. Period. Reminders: • Dispose of fireplace ashes properly, and only after they are fully cold • Check vehicle chains so they are secure and not dragging • Put cigarettes out completely and never toss them on the ground or out a window Have fun. Be safe. Protect Jeffco. #cofire

Helping Hands After Highway 285 Rollover Deputy Evans proved compassion is an action word on February 8 after responding to a rollover crash on southbound Highway 285. An SUV had flipped onto its roof, trapping the driver inside. The driver, Henry, was awake and talking but hanging upside down in his seat belt. With safety and time in mind, Deputy Evans, along with Deputies Burley and Carter, broke a window to reach him, opened the door, and carefully worked to free the driver’s legs before helping him out. Deputies then moved the driver to a safe spot nearby until paramedics arrived. Henry was then taken to the hospital to be treated. In moments like this, cool heads, calm hands and a caring heart make all the difference.

Today, we honor a hero. On this anniversary of K9 Graffit’s ultimate sacrifice on February 13, 2023, we pause to remember his bravery, loyalty, and service. His loss is still felt across our agency and throughout our community. K9 Graffit was shot and killed while assisting the Golden Police Department and the Colorado School of Mines with a search for an armed suspect in Golden. Last year, we placed a statue in his honor beside the Rose Garden on the west side of the Sheriff’s Office. It stands as a lasting tribute and a quiet place for reflection. K9s are vital to law enforcement. They help protect deputies and the public, strengthen our ability to locate people and evidence, and serve with a loyalty and courage that never wavers. K9 Graffit, always in our hearts. Forever our hero. 🐾

Attention Parents – “Senior Assassin” Game What is Senior Assassin? Each year, high school seniors across the country take part in an elimination style game. Students are assigned a “target” and try to “eliminate” them using water guns or similar toys like Nerf style blasters or Orbeez guns. Take a second to picture this unfolding from across a hallway or parking lot. These pranks can look disturbingly similar to real firearms. What are the risks? These games generate emergency calls to law enforcement agencies every year, including here in Jefferson County. JCSO School Resource Officers at two local high schools have recovered battery powered water guns from senior students participating in “Senior Assassin.” In these two cases, disruption was limited. But realistic looking toy guns can and have led to real life consequences. In recent years, we have seen participants involved in: • Shooting at occupants of moving vehicles from other moving vehicles • Trespassing on private property • Hiding in bushes or landscaping outside businesses at night • Carrying and displaying realistic toy guns on school grounds In public settings like schools or businesses, these situations can trigger lockdowns and a heavy law enforcement response. In the worst cases nationwide, young adults have been shot and seriously injured. Here in Jefferson County, severe disruptions can also lead to criminal charges. Talk to your kids. It is simply not worth it.

Twelve years ago today, we lost a brother, a dear friend, a dedicated sergeant, and a man who spent his life striving to make the world a better place. Sergeant Dave Baldwin was tragically killed in the line of duty on January 26, 2014, when a wrong-way driver struck him as he conducted traffic patrol on his department motorcycle on Highway 93. Today, we pause to remember Dave and honor all he accomplished during his remarkable 27 years of public service with the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office. Each deputy accepts the challenges of this profession and is aware of the risks involved. Therefore, it is imperative we take the time to remember those individuals who have given their lives in service, so that they are never forgotten. Dave was known for his infectious smile, unwavering generosity, and dedication to his family. He deeply loved his wife, Crystal, and his son, Josh. His strength and legacy continue to live on through them and everyone whose lives he touched. At 8:00 a.m. this morning, we honored Dave’s memory with a moment of silence over the radio, and a visit to the roadside memorial with Dave's wife, Crystal. Though he may be gone, Sergeant Dave Baldwin will never be forgotten

National Dress Up Your Pet (K9) Day Our Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office K9s spend their days working hard, catching bad guys, and helping protect Jeffco with their handlers right alongside them. But even the toughest four-legged crime fighters deserve a moment to swap work mode for goof mode. So today we let AI pick the costumes and it chose… absolute chaos in the best way. Pirate. Superhero. Detective. Bumblebee. Cowboy. Lion. Royalty. Behind the costumes are serious working dogs who train nonstop and show up every day ready to do the job. Today we are just adding a little extra fun, plus toys, treats, and plenty of good dog energy.

Teamwork in the Backcountry: Injured Hiker Rescued Safely JCSO deputies teamed up with Evergreen Fire, Indian Hills Fire, and Denver Mountain Parks Rangers for a backcountry rescue at Pence Park on Sunday. Our deputies can be heard directing crews, along with providing light and helping with the transport. Together, they hiked nearly a mile through steep, rocky terrain with trees and other obstacles to reach the injured hiker. The hiker was brought out safely, one careful step at a time, with teamwork leading the way for everyone’s safety. It’s what we do. @efr_co @IndianHillsFire

Today, we honor the life and legacy of Sergeant Sean Renfro. Eleven years ago today, Sergeant Renfro was killed while assisting at a traffic accident during a snowstorm on Highway 285. He was off duty, but as Sean always did, he stopped to help. While he was outside his vehicle, another vehicle traveling in the opposite direction lost control, struck him, and took his life. Sean served the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office for 15 years and spent every day working to make Jefferson County safer and better for everyone. He was kind, faithful, funny, and fully committed to his fellow man. He was also a devoted family man and a pillar of strength and love to his wife, Crystal, and their four children. At 8:00 a.m. this morning, Sheriff Reggie Marinelli shared a heartfelt tribute over the radio to remember a brother, a friend, and a dedicated public servant who truly embodied what it means to serve and protect. We ask our community to pause today and remember Sergeant Sean Renfro, his sacrifice, and the lasting impact he made on so many lives. Sean may be gone, but he will never be forgotten.

Cheezo Check In: Popular Apps Parents Should Know About to Keep Kids Safe Online Kids and teens are constantly exploring new apps, and it can feel like you stepped into the Upside Down from Stranger Things, familiar at first glance, but full of hidden corners. Here are a few platforms we see most often, along with why they matter: • TikTok: Fun videos, but be aware of messaging features, viral challenges, and possible exposure to inappropriate content. • Snapchat: Messages disappear, but screenshots and saved chats still happen. Watch for Snap Map location sharing. • Instagram: Photo and video sharing with DMs. Private accounts, restricted mode, and hidden words can help increase safety. • Discord: Popular for gaming and group chats. Some servers may include strangers, unmoderated chats, or adult content. • Roblox: Very popular with younger kids. Has chat features and in game purchases, so make sure parental controls are turned on. • BeReal: Encourages daily photo sharing. Check privacy settings to limit visibility to friends only. • Messaging apps like WhatsApp, Telegram, and Kik: Encrypted or anonymous messaging can make monitoring harder. What Parents Can Do: • Review privacy settings together • Turn on parental controls or family sharing features • Talk to your child about who they are connecting with • Remind them never to share personal information like their full name, school, or location #UpsideDown #Cheezo #StrangerThings

Last week near Crown Hill Lake, our deputies showed exactly what it means to step up. They arrived to a grass fire and did not wait around for someone else to handle it. They jumped into action, grabbed fire extinguishers from their vehicles, and stopped the fire from spreading. West Metro Fire Rescue arrived shortly after and took over, and we are grateful for their fast response and expertise. But we are especially proud of our deputies for moving quickly, thinking clearly, and protecting our community in the moment that mattered. @WestMetroFire

Bringing Support to Evergreen, One Ruck at a Time Our JCSO Special Operations Response Team completed its 7th Annual Charity Ruck March in Evergreen, and it was a powerful reminder of what teamwork and community look like. With donations collected from across the Sheriff’s Office, the team packed their rucks and marched from Evergreen High School to Evergreen Christian Outreach to deliver supplies for local families. The route was about 2.7 miles, and together they donated 1,936 pounds of supplies. They carried what they could in their rucksacks, ranging from 30 to 60 pounds, plus three truckloads of duffel bags that could not fit in the rucks. For this team, the weight is not just in the rucks. It is the promise to stand with Evergreen after months of heartbreak. Thank you to everyone who donated, packed, carried, and helped make this happen. It’s what we do.

Last night, during the Red Flag Warning, JCSO deputies assisted Elk Creek Fire Department with a structure fire on Pleasant Park Road. Our deputies helped move hoses and used fire extinguishers and tools to put out hot spots. Strong winds can turn a small spark into a fast-moving fire. Please stay safe, follow current fire restrictions, and check on your neighbors. #cowx #cofire @ElkCreekFire

Winter showed up in full force in Evergreen today as our deputies work through the storm to keep an eye on the community. A few cold weather reminders while the snow keeps falling: • Slow your speed, leave extra space, and clear all the snow from your windows and lights before you roll. • Keep blankets, water and a phone charger in your vehicle in case your “quick errand” takes the scenic route. • Check on neighbors who might need a hand shoveling or a warm meal, especially older adults or anyone who lives alone. • Bring pets inside and limit their time in the cold. If you are freezing in a coat, they are freezing in a fur coat. Help us keep an eye on the roads, and each other. Stay warm, Jeffco.

Deer Drama Animal Control Officer Clark responded to a call near Parmalee Elementary School in Indian Hills after a young deer got itself stuck in a fence. The little one was wedged in tight and was making sure the whole neighborhood knew it. Translation of the loud protests: “Get me outta here!” Officer Clark, with a little help, carefully freed the deer, and mom was just around the corner. The two were reunited shortly afterward, and the fawn bounced right back to deer life, while the neighborhood enjoyed the sudden return of peace and quiet. Thanks to the caring neighbors who called it in. And to our outspoken young friend, we hear you loud and clear.
