AGE Program - Adult Genetic Epilespy
🚨 New Research Alert: Dravet Syndrome & Neurodegeneration 🚨 A groundbreaking study suggests that Dravet syndrome (DS) in adults may have neurodegenerative features, with declining adaptive skills, gait issues, and parkinsonian symptoms linked to age and long-term sodium channel blocker (SCB) use—especially phenytoin. 💡 Why it matters: This is the largest systematic study of adults with DS, raising urgent questions about long-term treatment strategies and potential neurodegeneration. 🔹 Are we addressing the full scope of DS progression? 🔹 Do we need alternative treatment strategies? Read the full study 🔗: doi.org/10.1111/epi.18… #Epilepsy #DravetSyndrome #Neurodegeneration #RareDisease #Pharma #Funding

@caseyalbin @LyellJ @ContinuumAAN Tricky cases for a neurologist seeing the sedated patient in icu, until we can capture/characterise on eeg and provide reassurance. Good argument for cEEG to allow rapid deescalation in these scenarios.

1/ A 37 yo W is in the ED after an event of unresponsiveness. She’s had a 3y h/o eye fluttering, stuttering, head shaking, bilateral arm jerking movements, and unresponsiveness. She is now back to baseline. An EEG is obtained and captures an event. What do you think is going on?

@sciqst Currently, there are no studies directly comparing EEG and MRI with ALS sequence. However, one study conducted a comparison between CT scan perfusion and the Salzburg criteria. doi.org/10.1136/jnnp-2…

@phi3417 It does seem to me it will not be too far off that imaging would be part of an integrated diagnosis maybe a revised Salzburg consensus criteria will happen in the not too distant future @SBeniczky
