When Michelin Guide launched in Tokyo in 2007, it was a bit controversial. The Guide was founded in France in 1900 and did first non-European city only in 2005 (New York). Two years later, Tokyo got more stars (191) than either Paris (64) or New York (42). A cynical take was that Michelin — which is one of the world's two largest tire makers along with Japan's Bridgestone — wanted to make headway into Japan's size-able auto market by currying favour with the public. Another take: the Tokyo urban area had 160,000 "proper restaurants" to choose from as compared to >20,000 each for Paris and New York. All I know is this.
