Translation of a eulogy, from Italian: Goodbye Anubi, comrade and brother in a thousand battles This morning, Anubi D’Avossa Lussurgiu left us. It feels impossible to put this into words. There are people who pass through our lives leaving a deep mark. And then there are people like Anubi, who become part of our history, our collective identity, and our way of looking at the world. For us at the Repression Observatory, Anubi was all of this. He was a comrade, a brother. He was one of the most clear-headed, brilliant, and extraordinarily intelligent men we’ve had the privilege of knowing. He was part of our collective and made a decisive contribution to its reorganization during difficult years, when we needed ideas, courage, and tenacity. And he had all of these in abundance. Anubi was a unique blend of refined intelligence and uninhibited madness, of boundless culture and lightheartedness, of sensitivity and daring, of vision and vitality. He was capable of imagining what others could not yet see, of finding unexpected connections, of blazing new trails. He was the most brilliant, the most cultured, the most unpredictable, the most exceptional. And above all, he was one of those who never backed down. You left us at the age of twenty-five, twenty-five years after Genoa 2001. Perhaps it is no coincidence. Because Genoa was the place where a generation learned the meaning of the word “repression,” but also that of the word “dignity.” It was the place where we learned that there are causes that cannot be abandoned. You were among those who always defended those causes—with determination, with passion, with intelligence. You cherished them when they seemed out of fashion; you kept them alive when so many had forgotten them. July is truly our cruelest month. July took Carlo Giuliani from us. July carried away pieces of our youth, our illusions, and our hopes. And today, July takes you too—the one who was best at upholding those causes, at reminding us every day that we must never stop standing on the side of the marginalized, the oppressed, and the rebels. This unjust death leaves us devastated. We keep imagining you suddenly appearing at some march, a demonstration, or a rally—in your long black “Matrix”-style raincoat, with your ironic smile and that unique ability to turn every encounter into a human and political adventure. We refuse to believe this will never happen again. Because people like you never truly leave. They remain in the books you made us read, in the ideas you gave us, in the struggles we shared, in the friendships you built, in the laughter, in the endless nights spent discussing the world and how to change it. You left us too soon, comrade. And our tears will not be enough to fill the void you leave behind. But if there’s one thing you taught us, it’s that memory is not nostalgia. It is responsibility. It is continuing the journey. That is why we will keep looking for you in the squares, in the struggles, in the stubborn dreams that still keep us standing.
