Thank goodness the UK Gov has shelved its plan to hand Chagos to Mauritius. The Maldives has a far greater claim to the islands: we share historical ties, our language (Dhivehi) is inscribed on gravestones in Chagos, there’s a 16th century Royal patent, we have oral traditions and geographical proximity.

Submitting the bill in October 2018, to repeal an archaic anti-defamation Act, which was enacted by the repressive regime of President Yaameen to target journalists, remains one of my proudest achievements as a parliamentarian.
I believed that the press should have the opportunity to hold public officials accountable.
I took pride in concluding my 5-term parliamentary career with this significant reform. And as Foreign Minister, I ensured and defended the media's freedom to report - and they certainly made the most of it.

Submitted Bill to repeal the “Anti- Defamation Act” enacted by the repressive Government of Yaameen. An honour to submit this, on behalf of the Joint Opposition. The legislation was a draconian attack on fundamental rights, press freedom, and freedom of expression. #Maldives
