From the sidelines to the spotlight, our scholars are showing what excellence looks like. Havenview Middle School dominated the mat, earning 1st place in Middle School Gameday and 1st place in Advanced Middle School Traditional under the leadership of Coach Brandin. Their hard work, dedication, and Tiger pride were on full display—and now they’re headed to Orlando to continue competing. Brownsville Road students also delivered an impressive performance, taking 1st place at the Pre-Spring Break Showdown under the leadership of Mrs. Cleaves and Mrs. Swift.

Middle College is on the road to Murfreesboro, ready to compete for a state championship. The road ahead may be tough, but they’re prepared for the challenge in front of them. In a recent sit-down interview, we caught up with Coach Josh and standout players Cedrick K., Matthew M., and Miles H. as they shared how they’re preparing for their matchup against the Wayne County High School Wildcats. Tip-off is set for March 19 at 7:15. Let’s wish them luck, MSCS family, as they represent Memphis!

Before the end of Spring Break Learning Academy, we had the chance to visit schools across the district to connect with scholars and staff as they worked to prevent learning loss ahead of the TCAP season. During the academy, students engaged in in-depth studies in reading, science, and math. Additionally, students at Balmoral Ridgeway had the opportunity to hear from Black Men in White Coats and compete in the March Madness Youth Symposium alongside the women of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. These experiences help inspire students and prepare them for success both in school and beyond. #GreatnessGrowsHere

Sometimes the facts are all you need to make better decisions when it comes to your health. Recently, students from Ridgeway Middle School attended a health fair to learn more about the dangers of vaping. In addition to learning about the risks of vaping, students had the opportunity to meet with health professionals, try out VR headsets and learn the best ways to take care of their health.

As a continuation of our Women’s History Month celebration, we asked our women board members to share a quote from a woman who has influenced or inspired them. Throughout the month of March, we’ll continue sharing their responses that reflect this year’s Women’s History Month themes — History, Empowerment, and Resilience. Today, we highlight board member Stephanie Love from District 3. Is there a quote that inspires you? Let us know in the comments!

Congratulations to Brooke and James, students at East High School who won a $12,000 scholarship for their primary flight training. Most of the funds will be used for their Private Pilot Certificate. Their accomplishment is even more meaningful because only about 85 scholarships are awarded nationwide. The Aircraft Owner and Pilot Association (AOPA) recognizes that East has had a strong program and partnership with AOPA throughout the years. ✈️

MSCS’ next generation of standout drummers recently took the stage at a Battle of the Bands competition. Students from Havenview Middle School and A. Maceo Walker showed a packed gym that their art form matters and that they are already preparing to make waves wherever their talent takes them in high school. Moments like this further highlight the importance of the arts, one of Dr. Richmond’s 5 A’s, as students continue to grow their talent and express themselves through music.

Supporting Families This Spring Break! Today, school board and community members came together at Cromwell Elementary to ensure families in our community have the resources they need during Spring Break. Thanks to a partnership between MSCS and the Mid-South Food Bank, a Mobile Food Pantry was on site to provide food and support directly to families.

@RepCohen, who represents Tennessee's 9th District, recently visited his alma mater Idlewild Elementary. During his visit, he gave students an insightful look into the life of a U.S. Representative. The inquisitive students of Idlewild’s Civics Club asked questions ranging from student and government life to the process of lawmaking. Opportunities like these foster a sense of belonging for our students to become successful citizens.
