MSF South Asia Executive Director, Parthesarathy Rajendran and the Deputy Health Minister of Sri Lanka, Dr Hansaka Wijemuni, had a formal discussion marking a significant step forward in healthcare collaboration in the region. During this meeting, MSF Executive Director highlighted upcoming MSF initiatives in Sri Lanka and South Asia, with a particular focus on advancing research and academic contributions to strengthen healthcare systems, such as the recent collaboration with the Colombo University Faculty of Medicine during MSF Scientific Days Asia 2025. We also expressed our appreciation to the Ministry of Health for recognizing MSF’s role and including us in Sri Lanka’s National Health Policy and Strategic Plan for 2026 alongside other INGOs. This meeting was a positive step in recognizing MSF South Asia's role in supporting Sri Lanka’s healthcare journey and fostering impactful partnerships to address pressing health challenges in the region. #MSFSouthAsia

"Like medicine, knowledge should never be a luxury commodity." In August, the Delhi High Court ordered the blocking of free access sites — SciHub and Libgen, on the grounds of copyright infringement. Indians account for 8.7% of the total downloads on such sites, of which, 19% were medical or health science related downloads. Access to such knowledge is imperative for students and medical professionals for research. The Global South is constantly overburdened by the inability to meet the growing concerns of the region without open access to such resources. Their research is often not credited correctly or their contributions are not recognized at all due to their findings not being published in reputable scientific publications. @MSFSouthAsiaGD Parthesarathi Rajendran, and Prof. Devi Vijay of @IIM_Calcutta penned an op-ed with the The Hindu to address these gaps in knowledge and how we as a society should work together to dismantle the paywalls for easy access to scientific research and information. Health facilities in Afghanistan are closing, leaving mothers and newborns without essential care. We cannot stand by as millions lose access to life-saving services.

When the USAID budget cuts were announced over 4 months ago, the whole world braced for impact. Now, we are witnessing the devastating effects of these abrupt aid cuts.

This is the second time this month we have faced difficulty servicing the people of South Sudan, as the MSF facility in Ulang was looted on April 14th. These types of incidents CANNOT set the precedent.

The MSF Hospital in Old Fangak, South Sudan was bombed, causing significant damage and destruction of the pharmacy. The MSF hospital was the only hospital providing critical care in the region.

DEI is crucial in climate health reform discussions. Though still in early stages, it's vital to address the unique needs and climate concerns of differently abled individuals, women and children, and LGBTQA+.

But knowing what we know about community-led prevention and intervention, it is disappointing to see the plight of displaced communities. Relief efforts alone cannot help these populations, they need more guidance and support to stand back on their feet.#DisasterPrep #MSF

This issue is still something that fails to draw the right attention. Which is why NGOs tend to step in and provide the necessary relief efforts.
