Today we honour Jordan River Anderson who passed away, at 5 years old in 2005, waiting for services due to jurisdictional disputes between government levels. We encourage people to "Bear Witness" to ensure full implementation of Jordan's Principle. Canada’s progress has been slow in ensuring that First Nations’ children receive the services they need, when they need them. Today, everyone across Canada, "Bear Witness" by taking part in events, using the hashtag #BearWitnessDay, and bringing teddy bears to show support for the cause.

Sarah McCarthy, CEO @RGCouncil sounded the alarm 🚨March 10th when she published The Uncomfortable Truth About Young Adult Gambling: Why Ontario Parents Need to Act Now “Parents work hard to protect their children from harm. We teach them to look both ways before crossing the street, to be cautious online, and to make good choices. But there is a growing threat that many Ontario parents aren’t even aware of – a threat that is hiding in plain sight on their teenagers’ phones.”

Manitoba to ban social media, AI chatbots for youth — a first in Canada - CBC News Premier Wab Kinew announced the first-in-Canada ban on Saturday. The proposed law protecting youth from the harmful effects of social media will be the first of its kind in Canada. Keniw said the platforms are intentionally designed to get people "addicted to the infinite scroll," contributing to mental health issues like anxiety and depression. "They're doing these very awful things to kids all in the name of a few likes, all in the name of more engagement, and all in the name of money." apple.news/A0P3smSyQTnOj2…

Recently declassified records have confirmed that Indigenous leaders and organizations were subject to widespread RCMP surveillance between the late 1960s and early 1980s.    Reporting by CBC Indigenous shows that lawful advocacy for land, treaty rights, and self-determination was monitored through informants, surveillance, and intelligence gathering, with federal approval.    For many Indigenous communities, this reflects experiences that have been lived and shared for generations. It also connects to a longer history of monitoring by state institutions.    These findings contribute to a broader understanding of how Indigenous political movements were treated in Canada and highlight the need for accountability, transparency, and action.    Read the blog post: Go to our website to read the full blog post (including a full list of source links) downiewenjak.ca/blog-rcmp #IndigenousRights #RCMP #Declassified #TreatyRights #Surveillance #Reconciliation

After MSIFN has continuously stated our concerns with the lack of meaningful consultation over plans for a massive development in NE Pickering, council has deferred their decision for one month to allow Mayor Kevin Ashe time to set up a meeting with the Chief and MSIFN Council members. In our view, there has been a complete lack of meaningful dialogue and our requests to meet to discuss our significant concerns have largely been ignored. A consultation protocol between the City of Pickering and MSIFN is needed.
