#OnThisDay in 1981: Bobby Unser took his third #Indy500 win - and was stripped of it by Monday for passing under yellow out of the pits! 🤯 Reinstated on appeal in October, an unhappy Unser soon retired, and the acrimony cost him and runner-up Mario Andretti their friendship. 😔

#OnThisDay 50 years ago: the 1976 #F1 #BelgianGP was back at Zolder, with a serene pole-to-win run for a still-injured Niki Lauda, leading a Ferrari 1-2; James Hunt couldn't rebound from his Spain DSQ - a practice crash and a mid-race gearbox failure in the spare McLaren M23. 😫

#OnThisDay 10 years ago: wunderkind Max Verstappen seized his first #F1 win at the 2016 #SpanishGP to become the youngest ever Grand Prix winner, and Mercedes' Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg collided - the most spectacular low point in the combustible "Brocedes" partnership 🫣

It took around ten minutes to extract de Angelis and another half an hour for a helicopter to arrive - on-site helicopters were not a requirement for testing at the time. Elio de Angelis succumbed to the effects of smoke inhalation in hospital the next day. He was only 28. #F1

#OnThisDay 40 years ago: the senseless death of #F1's underrated Elio de Angelis. Stuck upside down in a Brabham BT55 leaking fuel after a testing crash, few on the scene were equipped or trained to tackle the eventual fire and right the car. (1/2)

Le Mans' local lad Jean Rondeau was born #OnThisDay 80 years ago. 🇫🇷🛠️ Analogous to #F1's Jack Brabham and #NASCAR's Alan Kulwicki, the endearingly passionate Rondeau is the only person in history to win #LeMans24 as a driver-constructor, at the rain-affected 1980 edition ☔️
