Sportscar ace Bob Wollek was tragically killed in a road accident #OnThisDay 25 years ago. ⛷️ A former skiing world champion, Wollek became Monsieur Porsche as a four-time #LeMans24 class winner and four-time #Rolex24 winner in a range of Stuttgart and Stuttgart-powered racers.

A future #F1 stalwart almost made its debut at the 1976 Race of Champions, as Giancarlo Minardi's Scuderia Everest team ran a privateer 312T to give Italian up-and-comers F1 experience; we say almost, as driver Giancarlo Martini crashed during the warm-up laps! 🫣

#OnThisDay 50 years ago, a revamped @Brands_Hatch hosted the Race of Champions. 🆕 Though Surtees' Alan Jones was a sensational second, the race wasn't televised in the UK; the TS19's Durex branding led the BBC to pull its coverage - an issue that rumbled on throughout 1976... 😳

🗣️ "But here is now and there is Damon Hill!" The motorsport world lost one of its most beloved icons, #OnThisDay five years ago. To millions around the world Murray Walker was THE voice of #F1, charming fans with all his enthusiasm, warmth - and Murrayisms! 🎙️😅

We're already heading for Round 2 of the 2026 #F1 season! 🏃‍♂️ The #ChineseGP was first held in 2004, and in 2019 had the enormous honour of hosting the 1000th round of the Formula One World Championship. 🎂 Here are just a few of our favourite shots over the years 🇨🇳

Laudable Lauda's third win in a row, #OnThisDay fifty years ago. 👏 James Hunt put the McLaren M23 on pole again at the #F1 #SouthAfricanGP (three years after its debut!) but a botched start left Niki Lauda's Ferrari 312T unassailable - even with a cut tyre in the final laps! 😱

After a lengthy meeting, factory crews unanimously withdrew from the event, and the rally continued without them. It would not be the #WRC's only tragedy that year.

A tragedy long seen as inevitable, #OnThisDay forty years ago. On stage one of the popular but poorly managed #WRC Rally Portugal, Joaquim Santos and Miguel Oliveira lost control of their Ford RS200, spinning into a dense crowd; three were killed, with over thirty injured.

Born #OnThisDay 90 years ago: - 2x #F1 World Champ - #Indy500 Champ - 3x Tasman Series Champ - BSCC Champ - record holder of most F1 wins, poles, and fastest laps at the time of his death - one of the greatest of all time Farmer, Champion, Legend. Happy birthday, Jim Clark. 👑🌟

The 2026 Formula One season gets underway this weekend in Melbourne! 🥳 The #AustralianGP has been an #F1 event since 1985, though its origins go back to 1928 at Victoria's Phillip Island Circuit. Here are a few of our favourite shots from years gone by 🇦🇺

#OnThisDay sixty years ago, #IndyCar star Mario Andretti raced in his first #Daytona500, crashing out early on. Almost a year to the day later, he returned, and won - becoming the first part-time entrant to win #NASCAR's prestige event. 💁‍♂️🏆

Divina Galica - one of Britain's best alpine skiers and future British record-holder in downhill speed skiing (at 48!) - was talent-spotted in a celebrity Ford Escort race, and would make laudable showings in the Shellsport/British #F1 series, with five podiums in total.

Later today, racing driver Simona de Silvestro competes in the two-woman bobsleigh heats at the 2026 #WinterOlympics. In the 1970s, a four-time Olympian's sporting journey moved in the opposite direction... #MilanoCortina2026
