Recently, there’s been growing debate around whether athletes should delay return to play (RTP) until the final scar maturation stage is reached. We addressed this dilemma in our @RadioGraphics (2024) and @InsightsImaging (2021) papers, showing how MRI can support RTP decisions by identifying both the phase of muscle healing and the imaging markers linked to reinjury risk. RTP often occurs during intermediate healing phases, and full tissue normalization is not always required — but detecting radiological warning signs is critical.
