For the first time in a while, I'm in the @LowyInstitute.
This piece explores a subject that's been rattling in my brain for months, and crystallised in the last fortnight – what will Donald Trump's re-election mean for the people of Ukraine?

Ah, the Crows.
They won a lot of new fans last season. Problem is, they also lost a lot of close games. Their best is very, very good – but there are challenges ahead.

@AnthProc Thanks very much!! Lots more to come but it's been fun so far. Your stuff looks really good too!

@MSewillo Just spent some time on the site, fantastic work, great reads on there.
Look forward to the content ahead

I've started a footy newsletter. If you like footy, then it might be for you.
One Percenters@onepercentas
The Demons are good. But they've had a turbulent off-season. Can they overcome that – and the flaws of their game plan – to stay at the top? One Percenters kicks off with the first of its season previews. Subscribe to get them all in your inbox. onepercenters.net.au/p/2024-afl-sea…

@danielflitton Well, there'll be a Richmond preview, Dan. And if they're good or bad enough to warrant a dedicated article, there'll be one of those too. 😉

My second season preview – the Swans.
One Percenters@onepercentas
In the second of my 2024 season previews, I look at the @sydneyswans. I suspect we'll eventually look back on 2023 as the aberration. The Swans have plenty of upside. But that doesn't mean they're perfect. Read it here: onepercenters.net.au/p/2024-afl-sea… #AFL #Sydney

@MSewillo You'd make an excellent pundit on an after-game panel, you've got the look for it.

Since I chucked in my office job to try my hand at writing for myself about two years ago, @p_millerd has been a regular source of solace, perspective and inspiration. His newsletter reflecting on 2023 offers all three in abundance: newsletter.pathlesspath.com/p/2023-reflect…

@GeorgeBlackman_ Howdy George, fellow youtube scriptwriter here. Would love to chat, however it seems that I can't DM you unless you follow back.

The reaction to me just talking about YouTube scriptwriting has been incredibly eye-opening.
It really feels like people are starved of education here.
But I promise you:
I am no better placed to be doing this than anyone else.
Before writing for Ali Abdaal, I worked in a call centre. Before that, an antiques shop. Before that, a bar (etc.)
I've simply committed to writing lots, studying what works, and collaborating with clients from whom I can learn lots and give lots in return.
I've been doing it for 2+ years and have no intention of stopping.
But something has become incredibly clear to me since I started doing this in 2021:
Supply and demand are completely out of whack.
I get emails and DMs multiple times per day asking for recommendations for other writers.
Meanwhile, editors and thumbnail designers are everywhere.
That's not to detract from their incredible skills... but it's just a fact that it's a way more competitive part of this industry.
Meanwhile, there is almost zero competition for writers.
BUT... that is going to change.
So few people do what I do (or, at least, do what I do loudly) that there is a HUGE gap for talented writers who love YouTube and want to put time into adapting their writing to suit the platform.
But that gap is going to fill up over the next 5 years.
In the near future, I would LOVE to be able to reply to every one of those DMs and say "YES, here are 14 writers who are absolutely killing it".
So... if you're out there...
SAY HELLO; I WANT TO MEET YOU.
And if you want to break into all this...
Tell me what you need to know to get started.
Kind regards (and a desperate plea for creators to put more time into writing scripts because it makes the videos better),
George

@FootballCliches @CDEccleshare @D_C_W Apologies if you've already had a reply like this, but I think there's one more license which wasn't covered: the one issued to a keeper to go up for a late corner when their team is chasing the game.

I was on this week's episode of @RadioNational Counterpoint, arguing that Europe must fully embrace nuclear energy.
Want to know why it was controversial enough that someone complained to the ABC about it?
Then you'll have to listen.

@noplain I agree, it needed something about the inevitability of defeat or the futility of sport in general. 6.5/10
