STEP BACK IN TIME AT SALFORD’S ‘REAL TENNIS’ CLUB HIDING IN PLAIN SIGHT ON BLACKFRIARS ROAD FOR 150 YEARS People walk past the Manchester Tennis & Racquets Club, on Blackfriars Road, every day of the week, blissfully unaware of one of the most fascinating buildings in the city. @MTRC1874 has been open for 150 years, one of just a handful of clubs in the UK that offers ‘real tennis’, the original incarnation of the game. It’s described by Stella Heap, the club’s long-serving general manager, as being more akin to ‘playing Bridge’ than the game we know today, using netted galleries, sloped roofs and other courtyard quirks to score points (you can take a lesson with their equally long-serving club pro Steve, who will put you through your paces). They even make and sew their own real tennis balls in the back office. Stella showed us around this splendid place, with its racquets and padel courts, and - somehow - a full-size squash court on the second floor, as well as their formal dining room, lounge, bar and their wonderful changing rooms, unchanged in over 100 years. They’re always looking for new members - they have 350, some scattered all over the world - so if you’re intrigued, pop in and sign up. As Stella says, it’s not your average David Lloyd. …. ⏰ 8am-6pm daily 📍 33 Blackfriars Rd, Salford M3 7AQ 💰 Memberships from £90
