@TheSumoSoul I'm very curious to see what he does after this coming basho, whether he hangs it up or continues competing for a while - my theory has been that this is all about kabu and he's going to retire ASAP. The Miyagino kabu is right there...

It’s official: Enhō will be back in jūryō next basho - it's an historical first - he’ll be the first since Showa era (starting 1926) to come back to jūryō all the way from jonokuchi (Terunofuji for example fell to jonidan, one division up) #nagoyabasho2026

One of the historic footage- C-17 accidentally landed at the small civilian airport Peter O. Knight, Florida, with a 3,000-foot runway, instead of MacDill AFB, which has an 11,000-foot runway. Here's the short takeoff video, absolutely unbelievable!

Statement from Oscar-winning director Hamdan Ballal: This afternoon, nearly a year after we won the Oscar, the same settler who attacked me shortly after I returned from Los Angeles--Shem Tov Lusky--again led an attack against my home and my family. Four of my family members are currently arrested and one is in the hospital. I invite all journalists and diplomats to come visit me and my family this Tuesday, February 17, to hear about how the situation has gotten worse in the year since we won the Oscar, as it has across the West Bank. Email me to coordinate your visit: hamdanalhrane90@gmail.com Two weeks ago we managed to get a decision from the Israeli court that the area around my home is closed to non-residents, but the settlers break that order and still come with their flocks almost every day. We call the police, they do nothing. The army comes, they do nothing. Today, Shem Tov Lusky--the settler who attacked me in my home shortly after I won the Oscar last year--came with his flock to my home. My brother called the police to report the incursion. The army came first and immediately raided our house, attacking everyone inside. Then they arrested two of my brothers, a nephew, and cousin. Another brother was badly injured and is now in the hospital. The Israeli court decision was supposed to make things a bit quieter for us. But the opposite has been true. The settlers have ramped up their harassment and the Israeli authorities have done nothing to enforce the decision, and today they joined the settlers in the attack.

One of the most lethal traps I ever used was this. The problem was when the player fell into the pit, he couldn't see anything because whipped cream is opaque. The other players also couldn't see him. When they tried to lower ropes, the ropes floated on the whipped cream and he couldn't reach them. They eventually attached a weight the rope so it would sink in the cream, but when they did he still couldn't see it and had to grope for it. They also couldn't hear him talking, and eventually he just expired with no oxygen and the whole time I sat there innocently. You might say I was too mean, but I can think of at least three ways they could have gotten him out of the pit. Can you think of one?

𝐑𝐨𝐜𝐤, 𝐏𝐚𝐩𝐞𝐫, 𝐒𝐜𝐢𝐬𝐬𝐨𝐫𝐬: 𝐎𝐬𝐡𝐢-𝐳𝐮𝐦𝐨 𝐨𝐫 𝐘𝐨𝐭𝐬𝐮-𝐳𝐮𝐦𝐨? 𝐓𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐢𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐪𝐮𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧… Whatever the reason that first led us to discover and then appreciate the world of professional sumo, it is undeniable how we all eventually transitioned from curious onlookers to devoted fans, developing a preference for wrestlers with specific fighting styles. Obviously, the element that makes matches most interesting is always seeing "good sumo," which usually emerges from balance and "clash"—forces that are equally matched physically, technically, and tactically, but perhaps with two very different styles colliding. Speaking with many fans and observing comments across various social communities and web spaces dedicated to Grand Sumo, one notices that the audience is divided into supporters of the powerful "pushers" and the more dynamic "technicians." De gustibus non disputandum est, as the Latins said—there’s no point arguing over personal taste—but this preamble was necessary to introduce the topic I wanted to propose: One-trick pony or versatility? Which is the way? It’s clearly a trick question, or perhaps more rhetorical than anything else, but I’ve often stopped to weigh these aspects. Recently, this little "earworm" has resurfaced thanks to the three-way rivalry between Hoshoryu, Onosato, and Aonishiki. The Mongolian Yokozuna (Hoshoryu) has always preferred a varied style, tied to dynamic yotsu-zumo with the primary goal of unbalancing the opponent through levers, trips, and other technical refinements. His bulkier colleague (Onosato), on the other hand, bets everything on his sensational pushing power, which he can produce even from a short distance and becomes lethal with more momentum. Meanwhile, the young Ukrainian Ozeki (Aonishiki) rose to prominence for his uchimuso, which initially masked a broader versatility and adherence to a more standard, solid, and concrete sumo. 𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐢𝐫 𝐩𝐫𝐞𝐟𝐞𝐫𝐫𝐞𝐝 𝐟𝐢𝐧𝐢𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐦𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐬? Let’s look at some numbers to give the discussion more weight: Hoshoryu has achieved the majority of his victories with yorikiri (82) and oshidashi (47), but these actually represent only a third of his total wins. Both kimarite (winning techniques) are below the average for most wrestlers (usually, these two represent 25% each; for Hoshoryu, yorikiri is at 21% and oshidashi at 12%). His propensity for technical versatility can be seen in two other stats: the number of different winning kimarite used (39) and the high percentages compared to the average for throws (shitatenage 8.5% vs 2.16% avg; uwatenage 8.5% vs 4.63% avg; kotenage 3.62% vs 1.65% avg; kubinage 1.81% vs 0.21% avg), trips (sotogake 3.9% vs 0.27% avg and uchigake 1.81% vs 0.08% avg!), and arm-locks (tottari 1.55% vs 0.17% avg). Onosato, by contrast, is almost a purist specialist of oshi-zumo. Two-thirds of his victories come via oshidashi (approx. 36%) and yorikiri (approx. 26%). Comparing these to the averages, Onosato wins by oshidashi in 36% of his matches against a 25% average. While we must consider that Onosato has fought 238 matches so far (compared to Hoshoryu’s 598), it is interesting to note his variety of kimarite currently stands at 15. His percentage of throwing victories is below average, and wins via trips are entirely absent. Aonishiki has fought 162 matches but already boasts a higher number of different winning kimarite than Onosato: 20. Most of the Ozeki’s victories (about 54% of the total) came via yorikiri (38) and oshidashi (32). It is interesting to see that the Ukrainian also makes good use of under-arm throws (shitatenage, shitatedashinage, shitatehineri) and leg-pick thrusts (watashikomi)—variants that always stem from an attacking position with a very low center of gravity, great solidity, balance, and leg mobility. The percentages speak for themselves: shitatenage 5.34% vs 2.18% avg; shitatehineri 2.29% vs 0.12% avg; watashikomi 2.29% vs 0.10% avg. 𝐇𝐨𝐰 𝐝𝐨 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐬𝐞 𝐧𝐮𝐦𝐛𝐞𝐫𝐬 𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐬𝐥𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐨 𝐘𝐮𝐬𝐡𝐨 (𝐓𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐧𝐚𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐕𝐢𝐜𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐬)? Setting aside "feelings" and fan bias, a cold analysis of the results shows that while all three have different styles and levels of adaptability, they have had a similar climb up the banzuke (we are talking about two Yokozuna and one Ozeki). However, there is a further reflection regarding Yusho conversion. If we look at trophies in the cabinet, the data seems to favor Onosato’s "pushing sumo," followed by Aonishiki’s solid defensive/offensive style (same number of yusho as Hoshoryu but in far fewer tournaments), leaving Hoshoryu’s technical and varied sumo at the back of the pack. So, which style should one choose? Is oshi-zumo the answer? Well, obviously not! The fact that there are no weight classes in sumo doesn't mean this parameter shouldn't be considered. Do you choose your style, or do you follow the direction your body suggests? It's a bit of both. Can a wrestler with an average physique (under 180 cm and 140 kg) bet everything on oshi-zumo? Yes, he could. But not at the highest competitive level. Could a wrestler 190 cm tall weighing 180 kg rely entirely on throws, trips, and arm-locks? Yes, he could. But at the cost of excessive physical stress, making him injury-prone and unable to convert effort into consistent results. Sumo and its rules teach us that while the goal is common to all, the path to follow is the one traced for each individual, without forcing it, but rather following one's own characteristics and aptitude. Returning to our protagonists: Can you imagine an Onosato methodically searching for the mawashi to set up an uwatenage or a sotogake? Can you see a Hoshoryu systematically crashing into the opponent's chest at the tachi-ai just to push relentlessly? Can you see an Aonishiki flailing with tsuppari and nodowa as if there were no tomorrow? I’ll tell you: No. Naturally, the smaller the physical difference with the opponent, the greater the variability of techniques. But the beauty of Grand Sumo lies precisely in this high variability: of technical choices, tactics, strategies, physical differences, and preferences in how to approach an opponent on the dohyo. Do you love technical, lively wrestlers? Fine, but remember it would be less fun to see only that type of rikishi fight each other. The real thrill comes when you see them face-to-face against a "giant" with a furious push, and you wonder, "How on earth can he overcome him?" On the flip side, for supporters of the heavyweights and steamrollers, isn't there always a sense of trepidation when the opponent is small but lightning-fast and technical? On social media, the three-way rivalry between the Yokozuna and Aonishiki has even become a meme, likened to "Rock, Paper, Scissors," where Onosato prevails over Aonishiki, Hoshoryu prevails over Onosato, and Aonishiki prevails over Hoshoryu. Perhaps these dynamics will stabilize or flip, but the fact that these three representatives of such different styles are currently the peak expression of Grand Sumo is proof enough of how rhetorical my opening question was. In the end, sumo is beautiful because it is varied, isn't it? Hakkeyoi! #italianozeki #大相撲 #sumo #相撲 #力士 #お相撲さん #grandsumo #sumoday #sumowrestling #大の里 #豊昇龍 #安青錦

⚠️ Reuters has now confirmed what many suspected. In early 2024, U.S. diplomats blocked internal cables describing northern Gaza as an “Apocalyptic Wasteland.” The reports included harrowing details: human bones scattered in the streets, bodies left abandoned in cars, & a total collapse of access to food, clean water, and medical aid. These cables were not speculation. They were based on first-hand field observations from U.N. agencies & humanitarian workers on the ground. So why were they blocked? Because they were considered “too graphic.” Because they “lacked balance.” Because they might make Israel look bad. Senior officials at the U.S. Embassy in Jerusalem, including Ambassador Jack Lew & Deputy Chief Stephanie Hallett, stopped the reports from reaching higher levels of the U.S. government. They feared the cables would contradict the administration’s public narrative & disrupt ongoing political cover for Israel’s actions in Gaza. According to former officials, humanitarian experts were sidelined, ignored, & outright dismissed. Inside meetings, the question from officials was not how to respond to starvation, but reportedly, “Where are all the skinny kids?” This was not merely policy misjudgment, but complicity on a grand scale. The Biden administration had access to concrete evidence of mass death, starvation, & social collapse. Instead of sounding the alarm, it chose to suppress the truth to preserve its political position. They did not just ignore the warnings. They buried them. Let that sink in.

@Owen_Grif @willmenaker They probably wouldn't have been as successful at rolling the Nazis back, particularly from Bagration onwards, but "they would have completely collapsed" is a joke. The only time they were remotely close to collapse was late '41 and very little US aid had arrived by December.
