I know I’m probably in the minority, or maybe the only one in BBN, but I am not a fan of this Dink Pate smoke to Kentucky. Multiple reasons for it. Let’s dive into it. #1 - All of college basketball fans, excluding Alabama and Baylor fans, were in agreement that G League players should not be eligible for college basketball. Alabama with Charles Bediako, Baylor with James Nnaji. Now we’re going to do it? Sure, the counter point is if other people can do it, then we should. I argue it’s not worth it, and it’s not the ethically right thing to do. Yes, we’re trying to win a National Championship, and there really aren’t any rules anyway. But I’ll say this. Mark Pope said it himself postgame vs Texas on 1/21: “The NCAA does get to decide who gets to go to the NCAA Tournament. They get to decide that. They have that power. At some point, when they’ve been very clear about what rules they’re going to try and enforce… they might lose in court, but they still get to decide what games count toward the NCAA Tournament.” So now two months later, because you can’t get any high school recruits, you want to do it yourself. Interesting! #2 - I’m not a fan of having an eligibility ruling process for what would be a perceived “star” player on next year’s team. Different situation, but we just did a “take a chance” with a star player in Jayden Quaintance coming off ACL surgery, and look how that has worked out. #3 - I know he has done his part by declining certain contracts or NBA opportunities to try and maintain his college eligibility. But that doesn’t guarantee he will be ruled eligible. And knowing the way the NCAA has treated Kentucky in the past, they could easily set an example to all of college basketball and decline his eligibility if he commits to Kentucky. #4 - He’s going to be demanding Top 10 recruit money. I’m not sure what that exact number is in today’s market, but it’s a hefty price tag. And seeing the way the G League is played, it’s hard to tell if his game would even translate to college basketball. Honestly, today’s college basketball might be harder than the G League. #5 - This isn’t the roster move I would make with the pressure that will be on next season. Spend whatever money you have to get Tyran Stokes to Kentucky. Save whatever money you can for proven superstars in the transfer portal. Then bring back whatever guys want to return, or that the staff believes can help win next season. If it gets to that point and he commits, I’m sure I’ll be able to talk myself into it and get excited about it. But right now, at the ground level, it’s just not a move I would make or one I’m excited about. #BBN #KentuckyBasketball
