A 115-YEAR OLD GOGO NOMPILO MALEKA SHARES HER SECRET FOR LONG LIVED LIFE By Thomo Nkgadima DRIEKOP - At 115 years old, Nompilo Maleka is not just surviving — she is still living with purpose, strength and dignity. The remarkable Limpopo supercentenarian from Driekop, outside Burgersfort, continues to wake up early every morning to clean, cook and carry out household chores — habits she believes are the secret behind her long and healthy life. “It keeps me young,” she says with a smile. Maleka credits hard work, prayer and a healthy traditional diet for her extraordinary longevity. Every morning, the mother, grandmother and great-grandmother makes her bed, washes dishes and prepares meals for her family. “Cooking runs in the family,” she says proudly. Known for her delicious homemade meals and secret family recipes, Maleka believes staying active has protected her from illness over the years. “My work keeps me young and fights chronic illness. Eating veggies and fruits keeps me fit,” she explains. Having lived through some of the world’s darkest chapters, Maleka says she has witnessed both the First and Second World Wars, as well as deadly disease outbreaks across generations. “I have seen many people die from polio, HIV, malaria and Covid-19 — and now, thanks be to God, many of these diseases can be managed and treated,” she says. Her favourite meals remain deeply rooted in traditional African cuisine: brown mabele pap, sugar beans and indigenous morogo. She also enjoys milk, Appletiser, oranges, mangoes and grapes. Maleka is the mother of 10 children, grandmother to 55 grandchildren and great-grandmother to 110 great-grandchildren. Despite her age, she says she is still “healthy like a racing horse” and does not take chronic medication for high blood pressure or diabetes. Every morning begins with prayer. “I pray for God’s mercy and grace, then continue with my house chores,” she says. General practitioner Robert Sehulong Moraba says people who live beyond 110 years often share a combination of healthy genetics, active lifestyle and strong social bonds. “Those rare individuals who live to 110 and beyond often have genes that help protect them from age-related diseases, balanced nutrition, active lifestyles and good stress management,” he explains. “But many also share an upbeat outlook on life and deep connections with family and community.
