No, this was not blocked because Warren or Buttigieg personally “killed Spirit.” That’s the cartoon version for people who don’t understand antitrust law. The JetBlue, Spirit merger was blocked by a federal court because the judge found it violated antitrust law. The reason was straightforward, Spirit was a major ultra low cost competitor, and eliminating it would likely mean higher fares and fewer choices for travelers. The Justice Department said the court blocked the deal because it would harm consumers, and the court found the takeover unlawful under the basic principle of protecting markets from anticompetitive harm. Could a merged JetBlue, Spirit have had more financial resilience? Maybe. But that was not the legal test. The legal question was whether the merger would reduce competition and raise prices. The court said yes. That is why it was blocked. Now the actual reason Spirit shut down is not mysterious. Spirit itself announced an orderly wind-down on May 2, 2026, canceled all flights, and ended operations. The company said the “recent material increase in oil prices” significantly damaged its financial outlook. Its restructuring plan assumed jet fuel at about $2.24 per gallon in 2026, but prices had climbed to about $4.51 by the end of April, leaving the carrier unable to survive without new financing. Jet fuel prices now now over $7 a gallon. So the honest version is this, Spirit had financial problems, the merger was blocked because a federal judge found it anticompetitive, and the final blow was a massive jet fuel spike directly related to the convicted felon’s illegal war in Iran. Blaming Warren or Buttigieg while ignoring the fuel shock it's just spin, and we're too smart to buy it.
