I will read it with interest. But the trope of crying for argentina has nothing to do with Argentina itself. You might dislike messi vis-a-vis Maradona but argentina remains a third world country playing against the countries with the best leagues and the most money. No Goliath

I assume many will see my latest @NewYorker column as churlish and grumpy. Fair enough. I am a lifelong Argentina fan, like tens of millions also from the Global South. But this is not the team that stirs my childhood nostalgia

I keep hearing from my kids that Argentines are racist. I can't help but wonder why they think this, esp since they have Argentine friends, who I strongly doubt are notably racist. I'm guessing from stuff they've seen on Instagram. But who started it? Is there some weird anti-Argentine conspiracy?

@MacDonnchada La familia de mi mamá es 100% española. Vivieron siempre a 10 minutos del puerto donde se bajaron del barco. Todos sus amigos eran españoles, nietos de españoles o hijos de españoles. Siempre hinchó por Argentina. Hay mucho fantasma suelto por acá.
