Tonight’s Moviedrome screening in Scarborough of Sunset Boulevard (1950), documented timeless exploitation. Intense acting by silent screen goddess Gloria Swanson had an air of the ridiculous & with dark satire on vanity, amorality & self-delusion made it iconic. Bravo @MadBasil.

Bob Odenkirk on Franc Roddam's 'Quadrophenia' (1979): "'Quadrophenia' (1979) is a movie that used all that French filmmaking coming out of the New Wave, but it’s a British film. Using the music of 'The Who' to tell the story of a youth who is rebelling, but he doesn’t know what he’s rebelling against. And it’s kind of got just an incredible vibe." Michael Powell on the similarities between the two serial ki!!ers in 'Peeping Tom' (1960) & Fritz Lang's 'M' (1931): "I have often thought that my own compassion for the ki!!er in the film 'Peeping Tom' (1960) echoes Fritz Lang's for the wretched little man in his film. I was half confirmed in this the other day when somebody who knows both films remarked upon the physical likeness between Peter Lorre and Karl Bohm. There is no physical likeness between these two great actors, but in both cases the hand of the potter has slipped, and through no fault of their own both young men are driven to ki!! and ki!! and ki!!. And it is their calm acceptance of the curse upon them which disturbs people, and especially critics, who find themselves unable to praise or blame, so choose to blame. In my case I was hounded out of Wardour Street and Pinewood Studios and had to seek my fortune elsewhere. I seem to remember that there was an outcry against Fritz Lang when 'M' was first exhibited in England; but he was a foreigner and a German, so it died down." ('A Life in Movies', Michael Powell, 1986) P.S: On this day, 66 years ago, "Peeping Tom" (1960) premiered in London, UK.

'THE MASQUE OF THE RED DEATH [1964] was Corman’s audacious attempt to make an art film for the drive-in crowd — a feast of roistering revelry with intimations of Buñuel, Fellini and Bergman.' ~Film scholar J. Hoberman Dir. #BOTD #RogerCorman (April 5, 1926 – May 9, 2024)
