Delighted to recieve the Eileen Stamper scholarship from @gladlib. For the next two weeks, I’ll be researching John Gladstone’s papers on the Demerara Uprising and thinking about different methodologies we can use to centre the stories of the enslaved people in these records.

Diaw reclaims these sites of history and violence by constructing a creative site of transformation that speaks to mourning, hope, and new life. A fantastic contribution to uMoya: The Sacred Return of Lost Things. Head to the Tobacco Warehouse in Stanley Dock to see Diaw’s work!

Binta Diaw’s Chorus of Soil couples an 18th century soil and seed map in the shape of the Brooks slave ship with a sound work of M. NourbeSe Philip’s poem Zong!. Okra and black-eyed peas were planted as seeds and now thrive within the installation. 1/3 #LB2023
