In this article, I take a closer look at Revolt on the Amistad and think about what it means to display this artwork at ISM - give it a read!

‘Revolt on the Amistad reflects Lawrence’s talent and skill as a modernist artist and an historical storyteller.’ Curator, Madelyn Walsh picks out the details and symbolism in this extraordinary #JacobLawrence artwork, recently gone on display 👀✨ liverpoolmuseums.org.uk/stories/object…

Delighted to recieve the Eileen Stamper scholarship from @gladlib. For the next two weeks, I’ll be researching John Gladstone’s papers on the Demerara Uprising and thinking about different methodologies we can use to centre the stories of the enslaved people in these records.

Slavery Remembrance is back in Liverpool this year 20-27 August, as the city and its communities recognise the history and ongoing legacy of the Transatlantic Slave Trade through a series of events, conversations and artistic responses 💙

Through a moving #spokenword, writer Lois South evokes Liverpool's historic role in the transatlantic slave trade and its legacies. She responds to the weight of the legacies on the descendants, and her personal connection to the museum. youtube.com/watch?v=jLGRAA…

Diaw reclaims these sites of history and violence by constructing a creative site of transformation that speaks to mourning, hope, and new life. A fantastic contribution to uMoya: The Sacred Return of Lost Things. Head to the Tobacco Warehouse in Stanley Dock to see Diaw’s work!

Both the Zong and the Brooks are infamous for reflecting the inhumane conditions the enslaved people endured during the Middle Passage. Diaw returns to the site of the wound in order to reinterpret it. 2/3

Binta Diaw’s Chorus of Soil couples an 18th century soil and seed map in the shape of the Brooks slave ship with a sound work of M. NourbeSe Philip’s poem Zong!. Okra and black-eyed peas were planted as seeds and now thrive within the installation. 1/3 #LB2023
