Federal private prisons only account for ~22% (~27,000 people, 2017) of all people housed in for profit facilities. ~94,000 people (2017) will remain in state level private prisons. If you want to see state governments follow suit, contact your local law makers ❣️

No one should be profiteering off of our criminal justice system. That’s why today, I ordered the Department of Justice to end the use of private prisons by the federal government.

@Binette228 Love how we treat unexpected null/ insignificant findings as IMPORTANT findings and ensure that they get as much recognition as significant/ expected results ❣️

As an instructor, how do you spend the first day of class with undergrads? Is it strictly a syllabus day? Do you jump into material? Here are my favorite first day activities- nobody asked but y'all are getting anyway! #AcademicChatter #AcademicTwitter

The first day is so important for setting the tone for the rest of the semester. If you could walk away knowing you've hooked your students and gotten them excited for a class they never wanted to enjoy, why wouldn't you do that?

Finally, (my favorite) have students write down their first impressions, feelings, concerns, or general questions they have at this point. Collect them & reflect on the tone you've set for the class, where your students are, and how you can meet them in that space.

LOVE THIS. I would add that I have tried to also build time into my weekly schedule to read completely for leisure- things that are unrelated to my studies and research. I feel like this helps me to exercise the more creative parts of my brain that I often neglect.

It's really important for me to maintain a love of reading as an academic. There are some for whom this is effortless, but given social media, peak TV, and you know, life, it can be pretty common for reading-is-just-work to become the dominant narrative. A few tricks I've found:

Concentrate on your work for 20 minutes, then rest for 10. Do this four times and you will have spent two hours getting 80 minutes of work done and 40 minutes of rest. It’s so doable and gives you breathing room. No pressure. The time goes by so quick.

I have seen so many people (including folks on #lawtwitter) comparing what happened at the Capitol yesterday with the violence and property damage that happened in some cities during protests last summer. Let me explain what is wrong with that analogy . . . . .
