We’re supposed to gain our understanding alongside Dante, fingers crossed for the intervallo ig??? I don’t see why else the writers would leave Dante with a fragmented understanding, unless it’s to teach them later.

What this means is that while that object/person still exists, it is no longer connected to the world. If you were to re-establish the thread, they'd "exist" again.
