#MajorSecurityAlert Somali Security Forces Seize Major Al-Shabaab Financial Hub The security forces of the Federal Government of Somalia have taken control of what was the largest financial hub used by Al-Shabaab in southern Somalia. The area of Ugunji, where the group collected a significant portion of its revenue inside the country, was captured by government forces yesterday. This marks one of the most significant victories achieved by the Somali government in recent years. Ugunji hosted Al-Shabaab courts that handled various legal cases, as well as financial offices responsible for operations in the Banaadir and Lower Shabelle regions, which had been active for the past 15 years. Intelligence obtained from within Al-Shabaab had indicated that the group derived the majority of its income, estimated at around 70%, from Banaadir and Lower Shabelle. This revenue stream is now expected to be severely disrupted following the loss of Ugunji.
