CREATOR ADVICE If you’re a new or experienced creator, treat every comic book contract,no matter the company’s size,as something that must be reviewed by a lawyer. Some companies don’t have your best interests in mind, and many use generic or AI‑generated contracts that aren’t tailored to your situation with expectations you will edit them. A qualified attorney protects your rights, ensures transparency in accounting, and secures your ability to audit the company if needed. I keep hearing about creators getting taken advantage of, and this is the only reliable way to protect yourself. The more experienced the lawyer is with entertainment or publishing contracts, the better. If you’re creating new characters for a larger company, always request co‑ownership and creator‑share paperwork. They will not offer it—you have to ask. Some companies may offer a buyout, but every detail must be in writing. Handshake deals don’t hold up in court, and in my experience, companies often deny they ever happened. Slow down, get everything documented, and protect your work. Be smart. Learn from others mistakes, not your own.

IDW TO OWN 100% OF PUBLISHED COMIC CONTENT I have mixed opinions on this. Here are the pros: 1. The shift to curating the content in hopes of building franchises that can evolve to on-screen stories with merchandise is a welcomed move that expands ways to engage with a universe. 2. It removes the financial risk of creators in exchange for later stage profit sharing. 3. The publisher has a vested interest in curating better stories that leads to improved quality and discoverability of well crafted stories. GRASS ISN’T ALWAYS GREENER One the opposite end, creators retaining rights to their creation is a path many will still want to exercise. Curated publications reduces the probability of getting your story published. This in turn can lead to some truly magnificent comics being left out of the market. If anything this will elevate creator owned publications like @ImageComics and @MagmaComix. If you’re a comic book creator, share your thoughts below. Will this move by IDW be good or bad for the industry?

I think it’s about time you became a comic artist, don’t you?

So I hate to be the guy that begs, but as of noon today (4th feb) I’ll be actually legitimately homeless as in nowhere to stay and no money to eat. The one gig I’ve got won’t pay until I’ve done at least another weeks work on it, but obviously one cannot be painting whilst living in an underpass so I’m throwing this out there in the hope that someone can lend a helping hand. I’m not into the gofundme stuff as I have plenty of art to sell and skills to farm out so no need for charity, but I wouldn’t say no to a pity purchase from my shop.
