Firstly, his children are CODAs (Children of Deaf Adults), meaning their first language is Betazoid Sign Language. Secondly, Deaf people and Deaf culture clearly thrive in the future, and are not portrayed as something that needs to be “fixed”.

One of the things I loved most in Episode 2 of Starfleet Academy was the Deaf representation through the character Emrin Sadal, played by Anthony Natale. Three moments that genuinely made me smile:

@RobertPicardo @jondelarroz Exactly! “Eating” implies intent, the cadet clearly frames it as an accident. This mishap doesn’t make them unworthy of the Academy, especially when over a throwaway gag. Starfleet exists to train, support, and shape cadets, not just to filter out perfection. They're not Borg! 😂

@jondelarroz This actress is delightful and has many wonderful moments coming up. But - - if you find a "combadge swallowing joke" a believability problem, you must've really hated those piles of procreating tribbles 58 years ago.
