New research suggests kimchi may help remove nanoplastics from the body. A promising study from South Korea’s World Institute of Kimchi (WiKim) has found that a specific probiotic strain naturally present in traditional kimchi can bind to nanoplastics in the gut and help flush them out. The star of the research is Leuconostoc mesenteroides CBA3656, a lactic acid bacterium isolated from kimchi. In laboratory tests, this strain demonstrated strong “biosorption” — effectively acting like a biological sponge by latching onto polystyrene nanoplastics. It performed particularly well under conditions mimicking the human intestine, retaining a 57% adsorption rate where other strains dropped sharply. In experiments with germ-free mice, those given the probiotic excreted more than twice as many nanoplastics in their feces compared to the control group. By binding to the tiny plastic particles, the bacteria appear to prevent them from crossing the intestinal barrier and entering the bloodstream or accumulating in organs. Experts note that to potentially benefit from this effect, it’s best to consume raw, unpasteurized kimchi so the live bacterial cultures remain active. Starting with small daily amounts (such as a tablespoon) alongside a high-fiber diet may further support gut motility and waste elimination. While the results are encouraging, researchers emphasize that the study is still in the pre-clinical stage. The findings come from lab tests and mouse models, and human clinical trials are needed to confirm whether the probiotic works with the same efficiency in the complex environment of the human gut microbiome.
