1. There was no real improvement in the quality of Irish rivers or lakes in 2022.
High levels of nitrogen and phosphorus (mostly from agriculture and wastewater) are damaging Irish waters. Read EPA’s latest Water Quality Report here: bit.ly/3oVYe8P #water #waterquality

Tuned into #EPAWater2023 today. Limerick catchments - the Maigue and the Deel inside yellow box - are really impacted by phosphorus loss into rivers. Heavy soils & arterial drainage are major contributing factors. Good riparian margins will help intercept the sediment and P loss.

Excessive algal growth in the lower Dalligan River, Ballyvoyle Cove, #Waterford today.
#ClimateChange predictions mean that our rivers will have lower volumes of warmer water in summer dry spells so ability of rivers to dilute and assimilate pollutants will be reduced.⚠️

Congratulations to everyone involved. This looks amazing.

The proof is in the pudding for this incredible Tydavnet GWS project. It was amazing to see the excitement of the kids when interacting with some of the educational games installed in the new environmental centre. Fantastic work by all involved.

The message is loud and clear the climate crisis is a water crisis. By 2030 the demand will outstrip supply by 40% 💧

Interesting article that shows clearly the importance of both understanding the local landscape and thinking about the whole catchment when dealing with nitrogen and its impacts on water quality, biodiversity and the climate:

Delighted to see this video. I had the opportunity to go out and see one of these bat roosts being constructed. Great support and goodwill from everyone involved. Fingers crossed the horseshoe bat population numbers increase. 🦇🦇🦇

Ever wondered what those plants growing in your local lake are?
@BioDataCentre have just uploaded data collected by EPA ecologists over 15 years for 234 lakes on the WFD lake monitoring programme.
Check out the map to see plants in your local lake: maps.biodiversityireland.ie/Map/Terrestria…
